I think there's a 10-22 or 12-24 sigma that would be a little cheaper.

You get what you pay for, though. Extreme wide angle lenses are noted for their optical complexity. More expensive versions are significantly better performers than the really cheap ones, in such areas as Chromatic Aberration, Barrel Distortion, and general sharpness edge-to-edge.

I have the 10-22mm Canon and it's a total WOW lens. My best lens investment by far, I think. I have heard good things about the Sigma and the Tokina both, but have not handled them.

Either way, wide angle in this range is worth its weight in gold for landscapes; the equivalent of about 16-17mm lens in 35mm terms.

Robt.

For landscapes, you generally need a wideangle lens.
Ultrawide zooms lens would probably fit the bill the best.
I'd recommend considering from most to least expensive:
Canon EF-S 10-22 About $750
Tokina 12-24 ABout $500
Sigma 10-20 DC About $450-500

Good luck, also consider a polarizer filter too.

How much cheaper? You can't get wider than 14/15mm for less than $500 far as I know.

cheapest option is a 15 or 16mm fisheye. They are not so fishy with a cropped sensor.
Canon is about $575, Sigma is about $400, Zenitar 16mm is about $160 but it is a manual focus.

Don't forget that landscape photography does not necessarily equal wide angle...Telephotos are great for landscapes too!
