What are the best in-camera settings for the D70 for simple snapshots of family parties and such? I'm talking about shots that you want don't want to do any editing on with the best possible result straight out of the camera. Should you use the options in the camera to automatically increase saturation or sharpen?

short answer: turn the dial to A...
long answer: dial to p, attach a sb-600 or 800, set wb to flash -1, and set the image optimization to direct print
if you don't have the flash, set the wb to auto -1 or -2

I do use an Sb-600, but usually leave WB on auto. why would you adjust the WB to -1 or -2? I guess WB is still kind of confusing to me.

Because "warmer" pictures are more visually appealing, as long as they don't go too far. "Correct" WB for strobe/flash tends to look "cold" to most people.

what he said. setting the WB to the correct lighting type gets you close and using the front dial to drop it down a bit make the pictures warmer and more pleasing to most people... if i'm on auto wb (which is rare) or flash, i've always got it dialed in to -1...
