Rose you couldn't be more wrong about that. I know some photo's don't lend themselves to a division but but when they do...it's much more of a challenge to do...depending on how you border it. It's all in the borders.

I would suggest that you try it for kicks with or without an image that divides well just to see how hard it is. Split up the image....border it and then reset it into another frame...equal all around.

It's no joke

Actually, BOTH opinions make perfect sense. Rose is correct; it's easy as pie to draw two lines on an image and call it a triptych. Pawdrix is correct; to do this well, to make it seem organic, to make it seem as though this is how it was MEANT to be, is extremely difficult.

But there's a corollary; it's VERY easy to paste three pictures side by side and call it a triptych, but it's VERY difficult to do a fully "organic" triptych, one that seems completely natural and unforced.

Hell, this is true of any topic, basically :-)

Sometimes simply dividing a picture with lines doesn't work, yet at other times, makes it:

Neither of these would have nearly the impact without em IMO.
Instead it looks like verbal positioning to influence voters. Bummer.
WHY is it that anytime anyone expresses a view on a contest is becomes influencing voters? LOL...I actually find that a bit funny. It's just a VIEW, and many have expressed them on this thread. Score watching sometimes can get a bit boring, so why not spice it up with some healthy debate? Just a thought.

I've done it several times before deciding on my pic. I found it easy, however, maybe I have software you don't? I just used my PSP. All you have to do is take a photo, crop it, save it, open a new image box, fill it with color, copy and paste as a new layer, and pop, there it is. Do the same for the other divisions and there you have it. A triptych, if you use one image. Now, if one wants to get fancy, you can do drop shadows or buttonizing, etc, but that is just another click of a button. So, not blowing my own horn here, but I actually found it to be fun. Sure it takes a bit of time, but not much really to make it look nice. I don't use mathematics with it. I'm no math expert for sure...LOL.. and I do it all by eye. But if you want to be totally succinct about it, I imagine it would take one more time and more headaches.

My own image could have used a bit of adjusting, mind you. I am certainly not perfect at it, and never made a trip before. Where I actually spent most of my time was looking for the buttons and tools to make it happen. But once I did, it was really pretty smooth going.

It was at a 4.9 last night, which displeased me, so thankfully I am back above my goal of a 5.0!

Rose-I hope that didn't come off as an insult by any means. As Robert said...done organically with well thought out division and properly matched borders is mainly the point I was trying to make. I didn't find the exercise terribly hard but I don't find it easy either at least the methods that I have used or experimented with.

I myself don't care about my score too much on this one, as I know I could have done a much better job but ran out of time on my third edit to correct the obvious flaws in my entry.

I do hope people aren't dismissing single image entries as being non-legit. Outside of that....not trying to influence scoring at all.

Avg Vote: 5.5101 ...and very happy to be there

All for now...

I'm not insulting anyone. At least that is not my intention.

I am not sure what "organically" means..LOL...but I think I got the jist of what was said by Robert. I just don't happen to agree how well a one photo is turned into three. I never did like the concept of that, and probably never will. Maybe my mind just asks for more when viewing. I don't even find them appealing to me in galleries or for my own wall art. I would prefer the lines be gone so I could just see the whole thing; but when a series that tells a story or an action is in the three, THEN I find it more appealing to me. Like I said, I really just think it is a matter of personal preference. It happens in all contests really. I don't know how many times I entereds something thinking others would get the concept of what the photo was about, and they didn't. In this instance, people are also voting on different waves of thought.

There are some GORGEOUS photos that were used in this contest. I am sure that most who entered theirs think they are da bomb, and are unhappy their scores aren't better. It happens all the time. Some get it, and some don't. My garbage entry is a perfect example of that. It is presently at a 4.6. Not good, BUT it was in the high 3's earlier, and my goal again was a 5.0, so I am not all that unhappy now. Problem is with the comments. Some are SO odd to me. LOL....One didn't even SEE the garbage when it takes up over a 1/4 of the photo. So when you really think about it, these types of conversations are all just healthy debate. In the end, people will vote how they like and on what they like. It will always be about personal preference.

Rose - Everyone is entitled to an opinion. First, as I mentioned, I was surprised (in hind-sight not so much) to see this type of debate going on in a thread titled "Triptych Scores".

Now back to the opinion part of this. While you may be making personal observations, it also appears quite clearly, that you are trying to influence others into your way of thinking.

There's a difference between stating (made-up example) "I kind of prefer the entries that tell a story" versus "The better trips are...yatta, yatta, yatta,...and I'm voting this way on...etc., etc...

Bolding of text in following quotes added by me for emphasis.

Just my personal view.

OH puuuleeez. What? Did your entry consist of one photo? Is that why you are even picking at this? LOL....In your first quote you forgot the rest of the post, and in preceeding ones where I mentioned time and time again that "this is only my PERSONAL opinion". In the second quote you only bolded the one word instead of the "because of MY VIEWS on trips".

Just semantics. It is all a matter of personal preference, and again, another statement I have stated many times you conveniently left out.

I also didn't see where you quoted those that openly placed their own statements on single photos and how one should not vote them down?? Isn't that swaying the votes in the opposite direction?

I am not going to be so bold as to say that what I have said in this thread can "influence" a voter. People have minds of their own and will use them. They aren't infants, and certainly they will vote as they choose and as they feel and see fit, and many are as I can see. I am greatfull for that, and I am voting as I see fit as well.

Opinions ARE for everyone, and if you find mine offensive or misleading, I am sorry you feel that way. When I open a thread that says "VOTE MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY", then I think you will have more reason to complain other then picking apart just one persons opinion on this thread. And mind you, I didn't start the debate, I just added to it. I'm sorry that you are looking at it in a different light then it was intended.

Rose

PS: I have stated my "opinion" in several areas of this thread now and the reasons. I've answered questions, and I have asked a few. The horse is dead. I'm now going to only post scores so I don't continue to have others offended and take my posts as influential.

As you can see, if you are reading all of my other posts, I have dropped from a 5.2 to a 5.1, so just how influential can what I say here possibly be. (rhetorical).

I think I will just post my score, not delving into the discussion at hand :-) I am feeling pretty good with this score so far and have stayed above 5.0 for most of the day. I have gotten some decent comments, as well as some critical ones that are well recieved....I am just happy to be staying above 4.99 for now

I think that is a WONDERFUL outlook!! I feel the same way.

It is my birthday today too, so a 5.0 for me would be a great present from this site and its voters! :)

Nope. It's a triple. ;^) Score is middle of the road and I'm quite content with the results, so I wasn't really concerned about how you may or may not be influencing scores as directly related to my entry.

I just noticed that your voice seemed to be the loudest and substantially winded. I'm one of those kind of people that will step in when others may be too meek to join the fray, and I thought that a neutralizing or balancing effect was in order. I believe in a level playing field. That's all.

Smile and keep having fun! ;^)

Brad-Daybreak is one of my favorite images on this entire site (if it ain't in my fave folder now it's going in, in a minute). It inspired all the tryps I've done to date. The other one is beyond words as well. Also goin in to the faves.

I'm posting this becuase I'm disappointed I didn't read the directions to the contest. People really like my three photos, but they don't like the way I put them up. Since it was only 640 pix wide I arranged them in such a way they could be seen without shrinking them too small....not the way they'd hang! Oh well...lots of great comments....which is what it is all about anyway. Thanks everyone for the great comments.

LOL..I think a lot of people in here are "winded" myself. I am glad you don't think I am influencing others in votes. Gee, that must have been a faux paux on my part to have gotten that impression :=)

The update button is always fun, and a main reason I enter contests here. I am going back to it now to see if there are any changes. I am not having much luck on ebay so it seems, and new contests are in a lull :) I entered Cheaters, but don't like it much. I may have to redo that one. Ughhh.

Later!

Glad - it's my fault. I opened the can of worms when i pondered out loud how i was going to vote on some images that simpley would look better if they were not triptychs and saved for the free study like Judy had mentioned.
Rikki light heartedly said maybe thats why he had mid fives (mid fives people!). And somewhere around there my ponderance got blown into "lets give everyone with a single image low scores" (which i do not agree with, and i think almost everyone that agreed that some images were not great for triptychs feels the same way).

Can of worms open. Can of worms exposed. Worms have all been fished with. No Worms Left. lets get back to the scores!

I keep hoppity hopping between 6.3 and 6.28
but i've got a fave WOOT!

Question about possible DQs in this challenge:

How much do the rules apply as far as the individual images go. It is advanced editing challenge, but it has its limits, too.
I haven't requested a DQ nor I will request one for this challenge
It appears that some of the images were created by breaking the rules for individual photos, specifically cretion of major elements. By this I am referring to some beautiful, unusual frames that appear in the photos. I guess even though it wasn't outlined specifically in the extra rules, as this is a triptych challenge where adding frames is almost required, it is natural that the rules are bent somewhat.

Hmmmm. Well, it does say that regular rules still apply, so it is only my suggestion that if you feel some went beyond that, you ask for validation. Just my take.

srdanz - i think when they said we could use one image, that overruled the composities (thats spelt wrong ugh) rule. I think that is what you are asking?

My score is down to 6.25 boohoo heheh
