Hmm I was assuming that since this is called Single Light Source II that there was a previous challenge on this subject, but I can't seem to find it anywhere.. I wanted to look at some examples. |

I hope it is ok to use a single light source, and then a reflector to add fill light? Is that ok? |

I think that this would make it look like there is more than one source, and you would probably get marked down. Tho if it is an excellent image with very little fill light, you probably would do well.
I believe the point of the exercise is to use the single light source to create drama and insensity with dark shadows/high contrast. These will be high contrast images. Multiple light sources cut down contrast.
Just my thots.

Is it rollover yet? I'm really psyched about my entry although I think I'll get mixed emotions about it ;) Some people may simply not like it.
I'm jumping the gun and shooting for a top 10! or I could just very well be shot down.

I was about to shoot mine. Then in that Dating thread, someone posted the exact type of picture I was going to do. So now I'm struggling to come up with something. I got time. |

In photographic terms, a reflector IS a light source... |

It seems like this will be a bit tough to score. People talk about spill-over light or reflectors. How can you rightfully establish that the image only has one light source.
I would hate to see entires that are title: "Daisy: Lit from above" or something around those lines.
I looked at the old challenge and aside from the top 20 everyone else seemed to have more than one light source. |

I'd have to disagree. A light source is an active producer of light, not passive. However, it seems using reflectors may reduce your overall score, because it would be difficult to distinguish between active and passive light.
My advice, if you are going to use reflectors, make sure they add dramatically to your image.

Man, I'm really torn about this challenge. I have the very same problem in my shot, but it isn't reflectors, it's just spillover from the rest of the room. I think that's going to limit my score, but I like the pic anyway. |

Can't reshoot with black to help with the spill-over?

I could use a black sheet taped to the ceiling, but that involves some work. :) I'm using a pretty powerful light because I need the speed. I tried it outside at night, but there are other problems with shooting outside (I won't go into it as it will give things away).
I could paint the whole room black, but my wife won't appreciate that... |

LOL, I understand ... My subject is completely surrounded with reflectors (aluminum foil), giving absolutely no shadows and an almost 3-D look. I'm pushing the limits on a single light source (a 500 watt halogen worklight head in my case). I've shot 300 images for this competition, not going back and reshooting to introduce shadows... lol. At this point, I've got what I got.
I wish ya luck... I'm sure some spill over isn't going to ruin your image.

Ya, light tent isn't going to work either because I was going for some directional lighting too. It'll all work out... |

I do not think that a reflector is a light SOURCE, it is a light modifier, which is a totally different beast. Is there any "official" decision on this?

If we were to say a reflector is a light source, every submission in this challenge would have to be shot in a black light tent. Everything around your subject is going to reflect a certain amount of light.

I'm looking forward to seeing what people will do with this challenge... The last single light source challenge had some really interesting results. I hope mine works :)
As for reflectors, I have to agree that they don't count as a light source. They don't increase the overall amount of light, they just redirect it. I think I'm looking forward to the shots that don't use reflectors though. I think they'll be more dramatic.
