I was shooting for the current DP Challenge and mistakenly left my new IBM 1GB Microdrive in the pocket of my t-shirt. Of course, my wife did the laundry tonight. And, now the Microdrive is no longer functional. Go figure? Perhaps the Maytagâs were just too aggressive for it? Da, do you think?

My biggest concern is that now my fellow DPC judges will complain, I mean comment, that my submissions are all "washed out". Do you think the JPEG files on the drive will shrink even further? Hmmm, let me think about that for a while....

Poor guy. I think the jpeg files won't shrink too much since they're 50% polyester.

Jacques, is that a wise crack about my age and related fashion sense? Or, are you just commenting after viewing my previous submissions?

Ouch, it still hurts.

my.

gawd.

I swear to god, jpegs are 50% polyester, 25% spandex, the other 25% is dark matter. I'm sure you have great fashion sense. Who cares what you're wearing ... you're going to look pretty cool with two D1Xs hanging around your neck :)

Jacques, I have a great deal on a slightly use IBM Microdrive, are you interested? It could work great with your dreamed-for new D100!

I am not too sure about your percentage ratios? Right now, it is 100% dark matter and is squealing like a wee pig in my USB card reader. It sort of sounds like a little, tiny âHorton Hears a Whoâ style orchestra tuning up before a big concert inside this minuscule drive. By the way, the fabric softener has transformed the hard drive into a floppy drive; it is now Downy soft.

Dreadful microdrives ? More like dreadful laundry day. You have my sympathy.

why not put it in the microwave for about 3 min.?

lemme know if it puts on a good light show.

cause. you know.

2-300 bucks is worth it for a few cool sparks.

I think you should be happy that it was not a 2 or 3 gig Compact Flash. That would have really put a dent in the pocket book.

Sorry Morgan. That was a real bummer. Glad you can see the lighter side.

im one of those people who handles the microdrive like it was the crown jewels.

like i'd never just stuff it in my pocket. in fact, i never take it out of the camera, lol. too fragile.

but your posts about it are really funny :).

Geez, just remember to set the washer from "Delicate" to "Microdrive" and you won't have any more trouble.
01/09/2003 11:49:37 AM · #14
I just rinse mine out in the sink with a little Woolite. Never had a problem.

Personally I prefer the Maytag Neptune. We set ours to the "Hand Wash" cycle for the washer, and the "Delicate Fluff" settings for the dryer with a anti-static dryer sheet.

I would use the "rinse in the sink" method but I might slip and drop my microdrive down the disposal opening. I haven't found a broom handle yet that could get the other one back out! When ever my wife does the dishes I can hear the screams of my lost images! It's just too tramatic. I can't bare to go into the kitchen any more (I'm still a bit emotional about the loss). LOL

Should we start a therapy group for microdrive users. :-) We could help each other cope with the lost images. ;-)

Just so it is said out loud, we do own the Maytag Neptune front-load washer and dryer pair.

Maytag's advertisements are simply not true! I firmly believe that a top-load washer would have had the same results, so don't go spend the extra money on this new front-load series. They are not any less gentle on your laundry then a top-load model, nor are they easier on a Microdrive, no matter the settings.

And, the results are in, JPEGs do indeed compress or shrink in size once they are properly laundered and dried. It is even harder to press these little files. My wife and I are having a TIFF over this disaster. She wants me to take it back to IBM for a refund.

I guess I just wash mine with a bit more clothing wrapped around it. ;-)

At least with the Neptune the Microdrive has (possibly) less water exsposure than with a top loader. :-)

Any suggestions on getting the other Microdrive out of the garbage disposal? That on is still bugging me. :-(

For the one in the garbage disposal: Attach a little piece of baccon fat to a string. When you feel it bight, pull hard. It's just like ice fishing. Good luck

You could use a short piece of garden hose and creating a vacume with your mouth suck (syphon) the microdrive out of the garbage disposal.
