I'm just curious to know how many of you actually use the manual white balance setting on your camera? I've honestly never really experimented with it but would like to. Am I right in thinking that manual white balance can give purer white backgrounds for those of us who don't have expensive studio lights?

All the time, or whenever I get the opportunity.
For snapshots I just rely on the auto-WB settings, or I might set 'cloudy' or whatever.
But it's easy to just find a white/grey surface to measure against. And it means I don't have to mess about with colour-balancing in PS as much. |

If you shoot RAW, then the point is moot....You can adjust it ad nauseum in PS.

Interesting! For those of you who use it all the time what is your typical preparation before taking outdoor shots? Is it just a simple case of using a white piece of card, focus on it whilst in your desired shooting environment to set the white balance, and then take your pictures as you normally would? Is it really that reliable and simple? |
