people that know me and/or have seen my website, know I like to keep my prices low on equipment and supplies. I love to share my cheapness with newbies and budding photographers, so as to not scare them away from good photography by all the high prices for photographics "needs".

I want a bright red backdrop for some portraits I plan to produce in the very near future, so tonight I went shopping at Walmart. I walked out with 5 yards of Muslin for $23 and 2 bottles of Scarlet fabric dye for $2.79 each. For around $30 (and I even bought a diet coke), I have the backdrop I wanted for the project. Buying a Muslin backdrop on the web would have cost me from $80 to $110 to get a backdrop of this size.

It's quite easy to make your own backdrops and at a reasonable price, you can produce quite a palette of colors to work with. Here's a link to an article you can use to make your own if you'd like to try the same. Now you can put your sheets back on your bed and have a nice backdrop for your portraits too.

Oh, one thing the article doesn't suggest -
If you are sewing your seams, at the top where you put a pole through, I suggest making loops instead of sewing the whole top edge over. Loops are a lot easier to push a pole through.

Thanks for the info. I just ordered 15 yards of 120" wide white muslin but didn't know a good process for preparing it, so this came at a good time.

Do you have any other links you could share with those of us on a tight bugdet who are just getting started and are not quite sure what we want to do

Is there somewhere online that Muslin can be ordered cheaply? I think I might like to give this a try. I am tired of trying to make my green wall look white lol.

I found it really useful too thanks! I love having ideas like this. (Plus backdrops is something I should have even for just a photography hobby)
