I just went to my preferences and removed my old pic (which I never liked) and uploaded a new one. It appears on the page as my current photo yet when I returned to my profile, the old pic has not been replaced.
What am I doing wrong?

You using windows and internet explorer? Try hitting CTRL and F5 (force refresh). might update it for you.
May work with other explorers too??? |

It's probably a caching issue. Refreshing the page, as already suggested, should do it.

No luck!
What do you mean by "caching" problem?

To speed up viewing of webpages you can set an option in your browser to save a copy of the page to your computer so the next time it picks it up from there rather than the server.
I don't know Safari but there's probably an option to delete temporary internet files. This should delete all cached pages and will force the browser to get the updated page from the server the next time you visit it.

Your computer stores the information from the pages you visit in "Cache" memory. If you revisit the same page, it uses the information in the memory to re-load the page details (is faster this way). It often doesn't pic up small changes such as your profile pic. By doing CTRL & F5, you clear the Cache and the page re-loads as it should be.
There must be a similar command that refreshes the cache for your explorer... |

I have the option to empty my cache but I don't know if that's a good idea! I understand now what a cache is but not sure what emptying will do!
Ctrl and F5 does nothing for me!
I am using an iBookG4 with Safari if that helps!
Sorry to be such an idiot!

It won't do any harm...
At worst you may have to re enter login details to forums etc that you have asked it to remember and you may otice the page loads very slightly slower the next time you enter it.
That's all! |

Oh - and try the Shift and Reload thing.
Is "Reload" a button on your browser such as internet explorers "Refresh" button?!? |

Just to be sure that the picture is actually uploading properly, is that the new picture or the old one?

I think that is the new one? - I have checked your profile before ;-) |

In Safari, there's a command under the "Safari" menu called "clear cache now" or something similar. That's what you need to do to force Safari to get the new info from the server instead of relying on stored (cached) stuff. |

No that's the old one ( God now it's all over the forum and I am really embarrassed!)
I shall try to empty my cache as that is the only option under the safari menu!
Here goes, crossing fingers!
PS in case I never return after this, having wiped myself off the web forever, thanks everyone for the help!
It's been nice knowing you all!
It's a far, far better thing I do...........

If that's the one we're seeing I don't think it's a caching issue.
When you changed your photo in your preferences did you press the SAVE button at the bottom?

The one James posted that "Changed" only changed for you, as it was linked to a picture that was stored in your Cache (the wrong one!)!!!
Deleting your Cache just allowed your computer to download the updated pic in its place, hence it changed in the post!
Glad its fixed though...
