strange I have Votes: 154 * Average Vote: :( * Comments: 21 * Updated: 8/6/2002 11:17:03 PM
I still have only commented on about 10 photos and voted on 15 or so...

I always receive about 20 to 25 comments, mostly very goods ones too, and always get around 150 votes plus but I am still stuck in the high 5's or low 6 bracket. I try to vote on ALL pictures and usally comment on around 30, but this is only down to time. Try to remember that people love to get comments on their work just as much as you do, so try to comment as much as you can. |

Well, my photo this week has 28 comments so far! This on a score of 5 exactly (although it has crept up and down slightly from there at times). It's weird that I have so many comments, and for every flaw identified by one comment, someone else points out the same feature and loves it. This is insane :). Obviously it's not a winning photo, but it's controversial enough to get a response from a lot of people. |

I'd just like to get past 4... Boo hoo :) Still, I'm learning, 19 comments, nothing unconstructive. I'll be as pleased as a pleased thing just to get in the top 80 or so...

This is the first challenge where I have voted on all entries. Last time, when a friend passed on the DPC URL, I didn't have time to vote on them all.
I spent some time voting first. I put in a couple of comments but mostly just voted.
Then I came back and made some minor adjustments to votes.
Finally I am working through and trying to comment all of them.
I have commented every single of my 9,8,7 and 6 scorers as well as all my 1 scores. But I am running out of steam.
It's sometimes really hard to comment on all of them in a positive and constructive way and I don't want to offend anyone.
Already I am hoping that people will take my comments in the spirit intended - that is as an explanation of my vote and my feelings about the shot.
When voting I take into account how much I actually like the shot, (does it grab me?), how well it meets the challenge, how well it's taken (focus, composition, any other problems) and generally how it compares to the other entries in the challenge.
Then I rank the whole lot.
So a 1 score doesn't mean it's the worse thing I've ever seen, rather that it ranks below the others in the challenge and either doesn't meet the challenge (in my eyes), isn't a good photo, technically, or just isn't interesting in subject matter/ composition.
Anyway, I am now looking at the photos I have marked 2,3,4 and 5 and I just can't think what to comment on some of them.
I could put that I like this better than my 4s and less than my 6s but that's not really helpful. I could just put that I find this boring, but I think that's hurtful.
What to do?? |

Hang in there Kavey... I like receiving comments much more than giving them ... Most of us here are mature enough to handle the comments good or bad ... I believe I am becoming a better photograper through reading comments on my photographs... as well as reviewing the comments left on other pics... The scores don't matter as much to me as a well written instructive comment....

Hey Bob
Having read a comment from another poster in the Rants section, I have decided I am not sure I want to comment on any photos I score badly in the future.
I just don't know how to be sure that what I take as constructive criticism isn't taken as condescending, cruel, patronising or the like.
I really really don't like to offend or upset people so I feel it might be better for me to stop commenting on the low scorers.
Because I just don't know how I can both give comments to as many photos as possible at the same time as guaranteeing not to offend or hurt someone.
Kavey (Confused and hoping I haven't already upset someone with one of my comments - if so HUGE apologies right now). |

Don't stop commenting - especially on ones you score low. Personally, I would like to know why someone has scored my photo low. In a way, when a photo is scored higher, it's presumed that the voter liked it. I view this website as a learning tool - a place to grow. If someone submits a photo, that person should be able to take the good with the bad - although I know it is difficult.
I have found that when I go back after the results are posted, many of my comments are similar to other comments posted. If not, I take it as a learning experience - what did I notice / not notice that others did / did not.
I am very much the same as you (not wanting to offend anyone), but I can't grow or help others to grow if I'm not honest.

I wonder if there could be a flag people could set to indicate whether or not they welcome negative criticism or not that would be displayed by each photo when one was voting. |

if i saw a flag that said it didnt want negative crits i'd not bother commenting on that at all, maybe not even vote it! I dont see the point in coming on to a site and saying to everyone that they dont wat negative. They will never learn that way.
Maybe I'm being harsh, I dunno. |

A flag? That is an unrealistic expectation for anyone to have and doesn't go along with the purpose of this site. Of course we want to think we have the perfect photo but nobody does. If we don't invite critiques then we will never learn. |

I hear you but I am concerned about HOW to critique without hurting or offending or patronizing someone inadvertently.
One poster was upset (see Rants and Raves) by a comment she received recently and I don't even know if it was from me! I hate the idea that I won't even know if it WAS me that upset her until the end of the week's challenge.
Hmmm...
I thought what people who submitted wanted was critiques, and that's what I gave. Many comments weren't positive but I tried not to be hurtful.
I need to rethink this one.

I believe that the majority of submitters here can handle the negative comments along with the positive comments. For me, I look at all of the comments I recieve and weed out the ones that having no real bearing on the photo, are way off compared to other comments and ones that are distateful/rude. It is just as hard, if not harder, to give negative comments as it is to receive negative comments. But they are just as important as positive comments.
Keep commenting - it does help

The comments in the majority of cases where helpful. The thing to remember is that if u leave a comment good or bad. U have to help them improve their photography isn't that why we are here guys and gals to improve?????? So if its a shoot u like praise it. If it isn't give them ways to improve. |

I am relatively new to this site but have already learned so much by the comments people have given. Now instead of picking up the camera and shooting, I think about the end result before I press the shutter. I believe the negative is just as important as the positive in order for the photographer to improve. If I don't know what's wrong with a pic, how do I improve the next shot? I think criticism can be constructive without being rude. |

Hmmmm... I think it's proving hard for me because since I don't shoot digital (film only) I can't submit. I think some members feel that those who aren't submitting themselves shouldn't be commenting.
I appreciate your input and will think on it.
Thank you very much.
