I am using three separate photos for my triptych. Although all three photos are extrememly clear and sharp, I am finding the quality of the photo diminishes a great deal when reducing to the size required to meet the 640 pix. maximum. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

I have tried various methods of resizing and do note a difference depending on the method. I have found what seems to be the best way, but I'm still not really happy with the results.

I have some fine detail in the photos and it doesn't look terrible when viewed at the 640 size...but anything larger than that and the resizing is quite evident. Does anyone pull the challenge photos and enlarge them when voting? Are voters going to take the size limitations into consideration?

Any advice (other than going with a single photo triptych?)

Choose your subject accordingly! :-)

Yeah, I chose shots that I'd shot to fill the frame, and they work pretty well as a triptych...well, we'll see if the voters agree of course.

Too late for that, I'm afraid. Sunday is booked and I don't even expect to be back home until midnight or shortly thereafter. I guess I'll just hafta take my chances (as usual)

Either way, I'm not really too unhappy, because even though it may not look as good as I'd like for the challenge, in full size and in print it will be really nice! :)

Have you tried some slight USM? Of course, if the photo has a lot of detail it just won't look at good at that small size - but if the problem is softness (due to severe downsizing) then a bit of sharpening with a small radius should do the trick.

I ran into the same thing. Ended up trying different crops, orientations, etc... about seven times before I thought I had it as good as it was going to get. After so much repetition I don't think I'll forget how to do it.

If using PS CS or PS CS2 choose bicubic sharper to downsize.

It is not unusual to have to use USM after downsizing. I do not imagine anyone would actually "pull" the photos and enlarge them to view before voting for a couple reasons. First it would take wayyyyy to much time. And two, because you cannot properly upsize a photo from 640pixels. It is what it is. (meant to be viewed at max 100% size)
