Tonight my Canon 20D locked up. From examining it. It looks like the shutter mechanism malfunctioned and locked up.

I am very annoyed as I just got it back from Canon (had shipped it and my 70-200mm out to Canon - they replaced the IS mechanism in the lens).

So now, I take my camera out with a friend and try to get some Mars & Moon shots. And caput....

:(

*growl*

Now I have to ship it back...and this time they better give me a shipper ticket. !@#$%

------------------------------

I swear I am cursed:

Canon 20D (died)
70-200mm IS f/2.8 (defective and had to be repaired)
12-24 Tokina (defective focus, had to be replaced)
4gig Hitachi Microdrive (died, had to be replaced)

:|

Guess I should be happy my 50mm f/1.8 II works fine...*grin*

I just got the bill for a 70-200 lens that I dropped while visiting BradP... $183. Ouch.

Yeah...but all of this is undamaged goods, basically mere months old - simply defective.

drop that fiddy about an inch and half onto concrete and you wont have that either. mine broke on less than a 2 inch trip to the ground.

A Canon? It broke? It malfunctioned?

You should have gone Nikon :)

(OK, just trying to tease, I'm not starting another argument)

I actually expect defects....

But lousy service and support is unacceptable in my book...

I finally had a weekend with some free time and now I don't have a camera.... *sigh*

you should never expect defects. that gives companies the lazy way out. I think you need to be more persistent and possibly threatening over the phone...its a wonder the stuff I've gotten taken care over the phone simply by refusing anything less than I expected.

I don't try to be an a*hole but if I feel I'm getting short ended, I'll let em know about it. The power of persuasion cannot be understated. I talked my way into being accepted into a university two weeks after I got a rejection letter (i didnt end up goin there, but to illustrate). I think you could get immediate and better service if you really showed your dissapointment.

Just got my 20 back last Tuesday from the Jamesburg service center. Haven't received so much as a phone call OR a piece of paper telling me what they did to it. They "sort of" fixed the noise problem, but the onboard flash wouldn't pop up, and I told them, both in writing, and on the phone AGAIN after they had the camera there, that the flash didn't work. Guess what? It still doesn't work. Will have to call them tomorrow.

Jason: If you use the NJ center; call them and tell them that you need a shipping label to send the camera in for repairs. They will overnight you a FEDEX label, and you can track the shipment.

Mine will be going back AGAIN as soon as I can well afford to be without the camera for 2 weeks.

I am going to demand a shipping label. I was told they would not do so for the first send in. And told they only do that if you have to resend it. Well, that's what I'm having to do. I'm really annoyed. Went out to shoot some night fotos (moon, mars, venus) and caput.

Wow, that is quite a statement. You bought one of their best lenses, L glass. I would not expect any defects and if I had them in the first year I would expect excellent service.

Not trying to start the Canon / Nikon wars but that is one of the things that drew me to Nikon. They give a five (5) year warrantee with their lenses.

edit: if DPC only had spell check .....

I said I "expect" not "support" defects. (Well, yeah, I guess I do support them as I bought the defective units.)

ANYWAYS....

Called Canon this morning. They're sending me out a FedEx ship ticket (should arrive Wednesday they said). Then I've got to ship the camera back. Give it a week or two. And well...hopefully in about three weeks I'll have my bloody camera back.

NOT HAPPY!!!! Did I mention I am NOT HAPPY Canon!!!!

It's the middle of November sunny, crystal clear skies and 65 degrees outside! Perfect photography weather...and my Canon is caput!

did most of you who bought a new camera recently take the warranty. Ritz camera offers a good one. I normally wouldn't buy something from a retail store, but they offer interest free financing and that was the only way for me to get a $900+ camera. My warranty is excellent, 2yrs, if they can't fix it they replace it. Only a couple hundred dollars to protect my camera seems worthwhile.

Wasn't available... anyways...my unit is currently covered under warranty.

Did you ever get your battery grip back from the first send off?
11/14/2005 12:00:11 PM · #23
Did you get any error message when it locked up?
Have you tried anything yourself to remedy the issue before sending it off, like removing and reinserting the battery? Try different CF cards?

Yup got that back about a week and 1/2 ago....basically, I feel like it's been a month or more since I've been able to happily use my camera outfit.

Yup...got an Error 99. So tried turning off and resetting the lens. No luck. Nothing would happen when I pressed the shutter. (It made a stranger than normal excessively loud shutter noise when it happened.)

I am not one to friviously just send the camera out. By the time I call tech support I've tried all the preliminaries possible to me.

I tried:
- removing the batteries (even waited an hour on one try)
- various compact flash cards & microdrive
- tried different lenses

No luck...

Also, it's really funked up. It wasn't changing the focus points. Finally got that to change. Won't show any metering or exposure info in the viewscreen. Then the LCD display on top quit displaying anything. Though if I hit certain buttons I can adjust ISO, etc. So the screen itself is working fine.

The real killer is that the menu will not even show up. I can't playback images. Nothing. Nope. I believe the computer or something is halted. (It's behaving the way a car does when the vehicle computer unit has been shorted.)

So it's in need of SERIOUS help. And I checked the weather and all. Temperatures were within Canon operating specs (just so they don't try to say....well...where were you shooting? oh outside...in November...it's your fault it was out of spec!" So I took a screen shot of the weather for my area at the time of event. Cause I'm not taking ANY crap or excuses from Canon on this.

I just hate that I have such a nack for buying "defective units"....*growls*

Doesn't seem like you're the only one with this problem. Though the error 99 message is a generic one, it seems from the Google search I just did that many 20D owners are getting them.
