I know nothing about filters, but want to buy a polarizing filter for my Rebel. I noticed they come in different sizes (mm). Are these to fit specific lenses of the same size? Thanks

Yes each lens is a certain size and needs the filter to match. You will see the filter needed on the front edge of the lens you are using. Probably something like 58 mm or 62mm ETC.

What kind of filters go on the 50mm 1.8 and the 18-55 kit lens?

The 50 mm uses a 52 and the 18-55 uses a 58.

I would recommend buying a 58 (or larger if you plan on getting other lenses) and step-down ring(s)

For things like circular polarizers, it's best to buy the filter for the largest lens you own (or think you're very likely to buy) and then get step-rings for all your other lenses. Again, filter sizes are printed on the rim of every lens.

Buy a UV filter for each lens just to protect the front element, then buy a cokin system for the more artistic manipulations. its way cheaper than buying a sized set for each lens.

cokin filters are square(ish) and drop into a holder attached to the front of the lens. cokin holders have adapters to fit different lens sizes.

I wouldn't waste the money on it for the kit lense. Only because I don't think the quality of the lense is good or good enought to get a filter for it. (refering to the 18-55 kit lense)

I like the way the Cokin system is set up. But that brings about new questions. That's the difference in the A series, P series, etc? And how do I know what system will fit my camera?

A series is a smaller version of the P series
A series are for smaller (diameter) lenses
P series for the big fat glass like the canon 16-35 L and 100-400 L which both take 72mm dia filters

Actually my 100-400L takes a 77mm filter
