Can the crop tool be used to crop something into an oval shape? |

You have to use the oval selection tool and use the crop command (probably in the Edit or Image menu). AFAIK the crop tool is strictly rectangular and hard-edged, but can be rotated. |

I used the marquee tool, got the oval and did the "crop" command, but it is still on the rectangular background. Is there anyway to get rid of that background and have only the oval? I want to have this oval as part of a logo to paste into other things. |

The canvas will always be rectangular/square but you can change the background to transparent.

When I changed the background to transparent and then saved, then I reopened the file and it had a white background which showed if I pasted the file into another project.
Well, for now I'm just getting around it by selecting the oval and hitting "copy" to paste that selection in my new item. I was just curious if there was a way to actually save a file so that only the oval would come up when reopened. |

I've done it but you may have to create a new document with a transparent background or create a new layer with a transparent background, paste your oval and then remove the background layer.

I just realized something. If you want the background to stay transparent then you have to save it as a gif.

To preserve transparency you need to save as either a .GIF or a .PNG file. They are the only extensions which support transparency. If you save as a .JPG, you'll have a white background and there's nothing you can do about it.
