Just saw this on another site:

Nikon EN-EL3 Recall

This is the battery that ships (or at least used to) with the D70. I don't know if any other systems use the same one. Turns out my serial number was in the recall list. Good thing I have a spare.

From the recall notice:

Hmph, all three of mine are fine :( I'd be more than happy to trade old batteries for new ones...!

Yeah, the EN-EL3a is a higher capacity battery, so I'm not crying too hard.

Close but none of mine are listed. Lucked out for once!

I bought my D70 in Canada. The lot number of my battery is 45xx. Just in between the 44 and 46 lot Nikon USA listed as potentially defective. Nikon Canada hasn't issue anything about baterry recall, yet.
I don't fell I will be safe from the recall however. I can't beleive the 45 lot would be ok when 44,46,47,48,49,... lots are bad.
I am troubled that Nikon Canada haven't issue any statement yet.

Grr...and I'm going on vacation in two weeks. Do I trust them to get me the new one in time? No. So the question is, do I wait two weeks to send it delaying the new one even further and I suppose risking meltdown of the defective one if I use it or do I send it now and rely on only two batteries for vacation? Was hoping to not bring the charger...looks like I might have to... Anyone know if they have normal U.S. type electic outlets in the US Virgin Islands?

Mine is on the recall also. There is an option, which I chose, that sends the new battery to you and then you returen the old battery. You just have to give them your credit card number and return the old one within 30 days.

BTW - Gary, thanks for the post.

Thanks...My one batter is recalled, but my spare is fine...I bet it'd be ok if I didn't send it in...hrmm.

Oh well I opted to have the replacement sent, then send it back...I see no harm except that I will probably forget to send this one back hehe.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

I have a faulty battery and so does my partner so I contacted the New Zealand agents today and they had not had notification from Nikon.

They followed it up immediately and are getting replacement stock in asap. So if any one in NZ needs to get replacements contact T.A. Macalister on phone 0800 920 023

Thanks guys

Geesh, this means I have to pull the flash brackets off my cameras. Too much work...I'll have to wait until the weekend when I feel up for it.

Thanks for the heads up. I suppose it would be nice to get three new batteries if they are all recalled. =)

I'm getting new battery! Nice.

Had to get advance replacement since I cannot live without my D70.

I didn't feel like giving them my credit card number when it's one of 3 batteries I have, so I shipped mine before I got the new one, but according to UPS tracking, it's almost there!

Just so ohter fellow canadian D70 owners know, Nikon Canada has issue the same battery recall as Nikon USA. From what I saw, it looks like the same lots are affected. Mine is #45. I am not affected by this recall.

I ordered my battery....chose UPS 2nd Day Air for $10.00. Nikon shipped the battery out in 24 hours. That was on 11/14/05....Still not here! Not even close.

Nikon did great....UPS stinking it up.

Just noticed that Nikon updated their EN-EL3 battery recall list with more defective lot numbers. If you own a Nikon (D100, D70, and D50) and thought you had a good battery you may want to recheck the batch numbers to be sure yours wasn't added to the list.

Cross shipped batteries - point-n-clicked a few days ago, got it yesterday, shipped out oldbadbattery today.

No speed shipping, no nothin. Easy peasy.

I'm going to name my first child Nikon.
