ST-E2 flash transmittor - 1 550ex

just got the ST-E2 wireless flash transmittor - ran a couple test shots with it, one 550ex flash, and the 50mm f:1.8. i have yet to get a second one.
seems like it will be a usefull tool for a small studio. i don't have a lot of open space at our house at the moment.

flash power was set at -1.3 stops. minimal edits - black and white points set, and slightly cropped.

also helps to have a good model ;}

Wow that is good. I really like the one with the rim lighting. Exactly where did you place the flash. I wouldn't mind trying that myself. Thanks.

I have the STE2 and a 550EX, I also picked up a broken 420EX which has a problem following the lens zoom, but hey as an extra fill in light who cares ;-)

I would look around on eBay for a 420 as your 2nd flash, you may pick up a real bargain like mine.

the flash was on the kitchen counter - aimed down - and powered down to -1.3 stops i think - about 4-5 feet away. i shut off all the other lights for a quick second while i snapped the shot. i set the black point after as the exposure was still a bit bright - i noticed on this computer some banding - and i dunno what that is from - there really isn't any editing done besides the black point adjustment. i'll try rediting it later - as this was done at 7am today in about 20 seconds ;}

Did you get to that by chimping, or do you have some magical rule of thumb working for you on that one?

the 550ex was already set to -1.3 - same as i had it set for the other shots.

I was just wondering why you had it down 1.3 stops... With the 580ex I find +2/3rds gives best results in evaluative, and 0 in average mode.

I like the rim lit shot, BTW. :-).

the distance to subject in all likelihood is the reason for the different exposure settings between you and i. the flash was pretty close to the dog. i don't know what chimping means ;}

Urr. u mean that the -1.3stops wasn't on fec? (Flash exposure comp) You set that, it's nothing to do with subject. Ah well, I'm confused, I'll crawl back under my rock... :-).

hmm - well my camera doesn't have FEC...
i am not running the HACK.

but you can do the same thing with the flash itself. so i set the FEC on the flash not on the camera, and it was set to -1.3 stops.

for instance on the 20d camera you could set the FEC at +2 & on the 580ex you could set the FEC at -2. giving you a total of 0 for the FEC value.

well a couple test shots - and then i shot 15 or so shots leaving it set at -1.3.

with a portable ETTL flash ( off camera ) you have aperture, flash power, and flash distance to control exposure.

with out the flash you have aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.

Either he means monkeying around or bracketing.... Not to sure either to be honest with you...

I think all they want to know is how you came up with such a dramatic stop compensation. Many tests and different exposures or just a guess.

chimping is repeatedly checking the photos you took on the lcd right after u shoot it. I think he means, did you shoot, look at the photo, and adjust the flash n keep doin that (ie through trial and error)
