The magazine people loved this one, I think it's so-so.

What do you think?

Here's an inset shot for the recipe page.

Yummy!

I can understand the appeal of the first one--I love the limited range of tones...but seems like the cutout needs a bit more contrast.

Second one looks delicious, but the snowman with the red scarf would look yummier if he were in focus.

BTW, why are all your cookies male?

It's a gay cooking magazine...just kiddin'. That's all I got. The cookie cutter people make girl versions, they just didn't send them.

LOL!

Okay, if I'm being honest... :-D

I'm not crazy about the first one. I would agree that it's 'okay'. I find the shallow dof awkward - the top of the cutout is sharp, the bottom blurry. The second cutout is sharp at the bottom and blurry at the top...not one is entirely in focus (perhaps that was intentional?) and so I find no real subject or place for our attention to fall. I sort of like the monotone desaturated look and perhaps I would like this a lot once it was finished...meaning title and type was on it.

The second one is really cute. They have personality. I'm with KaDi though...would love to see a boy and girl snowman. :-) I like the sharp focus on the right cookie but the slight blur on other feels more accidental than intentional. By that I mean, the blur seems just a tad off sharp. I would actually like to see a bit more blur; more shallow dof, while keeping the main snowman sharp. Also, (you're probably thinking shut up, already! lol) I would like the red scarfed snowman to be the main subject (swap their places) because the red is an attention getter and is pulling my eyes from the snowman on the right with the green scarf.

*babble, babble, babble*

I'm done now. :-D :-D

I think the first one is the best :-). I can see the mag name at the top with a sub-heading and grab lines down the right hand side -> Shot for the cover right :-)

The shot is straight out of the camera. I haven't done anything to it. Focus has been swung out to blur the background.

The focus is in intentionally split to include both the cutout, the snowman still left in the cookie dough and the edge of the cookie cutter ( the story is about the cookie cutters). Focus has been swung out to blur the background. I might play with it a bit more, but they bought of on it. So I can quit shooting cookies! ;o)

The story is about cookie cutters and they didn't send any females! I don't think that's properly within affirmative action hiring practices! I demand a re-shoot! (Or a dozen sugar cookies...I can be bought off cheap!)

Brent, I like the first shot, it just needs a little warming and a slight bumping in of the black point. Brings out the wood tones and the yellows in the cookie dough.
I really like what you did with that shot.

I left it cool (tungsten WB with flash) to contrast the cover shots warmth. I also left it flat for effect. Not every photo needs to be color correct and have contrast to be effective. ;o)

It's a different kind of shot for me. Not one of my favorites, but should reproduce in CMYK very nicely.

I'm glad you like it.

:D
