Hi there, I'm sure this has been asked before, but I am new to DCP, so I thought I had better ask to ensure proper voting on challenge entries.

When looking and judging photos in a particular challenge, it seems like some photographs miss the boat on meeting the topic of the challenge. There are some really great photos that don't have anything to do with the challenge topic. Do I still rate that photo as a 10 because the photo is great in all ways photographically, or do I penalize the person a few points for not meeting the challenge topic, or do they get a 1 for not meeting it at all? Of course, whether or not a photo applies to the challenge topic is really in the mind of the photographer, so how do you all rate photographs that don't seem to align with the challenge topic?

Thanks for your help.
Cheers,
-jahoward

How you vote is up to you but here's a question related to your concern.

If you vote images that are great a 10 even if they don't meet the challenge then what's the point of the challenge?

How much you deduct is your choice.

edit: welcome to the assylum ;o)

giving a 1 for a photo not meeting the challenge is just not right ...

I disagree. If you can't meet the main objective, then why should you get higher? It also should discourage people from entering a great shot that doesn't meet the challenge, just to enter it.

I think it's perfectly acceptable. If we're going to have a challenge that revolves around a topic, then something that doesn't meet the topic could justifiably get a one.

I personally don't give out any ones or twos ever, and hardly any threes, but I think is someone wants to then that's they're perogative. There's not right or wrong way to vote.

Welcome jahoward!

remind me to figure out which photos are yours so i can take away 5 points off the top ...its just as fair as you giving ones to a photo that should have gotten a 10 but it didnt meet the challenge name, or how you perceive the challenge name to be. I can see takign 2 poins off for not meetignthe challenge... but to give it a ONE is childish at best

One hopes there is a thoughtful and possibly insightful way...

Personally, I give a 1, 2,or 3 for entries that do not meet the challenge depending on how good the photo is. (I also give 1, 2, or 3 for photos that do meet the challenge but have a lot of problems.) I don't have a problem with someone that gives 1's for not meeting the challenge. You have to decide how your personal scale will work and try to be consistant. Some challenges are easier to judge than others.

Edit to add--It's a good idea to give a comment when you vote 3 or less.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. Thanks for the warm welcome as well. It seems like there is no correct answer to this question, but maybe chaimelle says it best. "You have to decide how your personal scale will work and try to be consistent." It does seem a little unfair to give a photo that clearly does not meet the topic a 7, 8, 9, or 10 when I am giving a 6 to a photo that meets the challenge, but has some flaws in it.

I guess I will just be consistent with my judging. Thanks for everyone's input.

I guess I don't understand the 'it's not fair...' part. If you are consistent then it's a level playing field. I have no issue with people hitting a 1 for not meeting the challenge neither do I have an issue with hitting a 4 (or whatever) as the minimum. If you are consistent then there is no unfair/fair just different people with diferent voting scales.

Was this an example of being childish just to show me how to do it?

Here's an example for you. In school, if your english teacher told you to write a paper on the civil war, but you chose write a really good paper on World War II. What do you think your grade would be?

What an excellent way to make the point! Beats my old example of entering a red m&m in a "photograph something green" challenge!

I just listen to my Mojo and vote accordingly.

"While voting, users are asked to keep in highest consideration the topic of the challenge and base their rating accordingly."

This sentence appears in both the Basic and Advanced rules in the section called Challenge Voting.
