Removed Picture.....
Sorry for the confusion - Your points are well made and I agree that outtakes should be posted after voting ends.

Recently, there was discussion that outtakes should be held until the challenge is past voting. It's not a rule--just some of us consider it a matter of etiquette to wait. |

oops -- sorry about that. Just for the record my shot looks nothing at all like the one entered. Was taken on different days-different locations-different subjects. |

It's not just whether it resembles your shot...but whether someone else's shot in the challenge might be similar. Say you had this great idea to take a picture of subject X for a challenge, then someone posts a subject X picture to an outtake thread--all of a sudden your picture is being compared to a non-challenge entry....
Edit to add: This is a highly debatable issue--some folks don't see any problem with it, some do.

i remember once a thread about this so called etikette
but i cant remember have read real convincing arguments to give that idea a strong base
maybe im missing things..could be
but personally i dont have a problem with posting while the subject is actual at all
maybe im not hooked on etiquettes in general even
but with all respect i m not going to make a point about it
at least the challenge title is very apropriete in this case ;-)
add
and yes its my 'etiquette' too that the outtake doesnt even come close to revealing my entry

That's not really the issue, Wil. Suppose your entry was of a "dead end" sign and you posted an outtake of a gravestone. Suppose a series of responses tot he gravestone showed, collectively, that the responders thought the gravestone was a cliche and didn't like it. Now there are actually a LOT of gravestones int he challenge, and it's quite possiblke the colelctive voting mind could be soemwhat swayed by this thread, to the detriment of others' gravestone entries.
That's the theory, anyway...

Ah, but now in posting that theoretical scenario, you may have in fact biased some voters against gravestone entries, being the respected and influencial member that you are. Oh, where will the madness end???

Current Challenge
Discuss the current challenge and how you feel about it or ideas you may haveâ€Â¦
says the forum header
so i still think posting outtakes is perfectly well in between the lines of DPCspirit of sharing and learning (rather than winning)
..and Robert thanks for kind and clear even funny explanation
but my point is that maybe maybe some 'etiquettes' should be tested if their foundation is still stabile and IMO the etiquette just should be not to reveal youre own and actual entry
thats all i m gonna say about it ;-) |

I agree with you. I think that having an outtake thread running simultanuously with the challenge is far more educating than waiting until after the challenge ends. I understand the concerns that people have about this, but think the effect is not as big as some people think. Especially now we have two non-member challenges running, it would be nice to be able to learn from the challenge you didn't enter by discussing an outtake that you might have for that challenge. Just MHO. |

There appears to NEVER be a good time for outtakes. Post them early and people say you're influencing voters. Post them after the challenge and people think you're whining, you know the "coulda, shoulda, woulda thing". Of course after the challenge who wants to talk about stuff from something that is over with? Unless of course you want to complain about your favorite images in the just completed challenge not going as high as you thought they should...more whining I suppose.
Just can't win for losing. ;^)
Safest bet - if you have an image you like, post it in the 'Individual Photograph Discussion' forums and don't say it's an "outtake". Maybe word it like, "Out and about while I was shooting for the Dead End challenge I saw this. Thought it was interesting. What do you think?" Of course I guess you could post it then in the 'Out and About' forums?
What a mess we've created here...
