Could someone give me some pointers on how I should go about taking sunset photos with the Canon 20d? Say if I'm trying to take a picture of the lake, its reflection, and the colors of the sunset. What should my camera setting be so that I can still see some of the trees instead of bunch of black trees? How about if I want to take a picture where the sun is still up (without having to look directly at the sun)? I'm new to this forum as well as taking photos. Any detail tips or instruction would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance. |

I'd use aperture priority (though it doesn't really matter), set to somewhere around f8-f16, and let the camera choose the shutter speed based on its own metering. Then, use your exposure compensation to take "bracketed" shots around that exposure -.5, -1.0, +.5, +1.0, etc. and you're bound to get some good ones.
If the sky is very bright, the trees are going to look dark. You can compensate for this somewhat in post processing, but that's how it works when you're taking pictures of the sunlit sky (even at sunset). |
