Well, the first money-making shoot is scheduled for the 23rd. There are some clients lined up already...
I did teh shots you saw in my Portfolio - used a lumedyne 200WS strobe with a home made umbrella and homemade clamp (need to remedy that mess) and my metz 54 with LS 2 on a tripod. in the BG i had an older quantarray flashgun. All items bought on ebay, most used. Used a cheap radio trigger form the camera to the lumedyne and optical triggers on the rest. (total investment about $865) I want some ABs...if this works i think that is what i'll get.
We had to use the end of the hallway. I have no backdrop..working on one, still have to create a stand for it - this weeks task. So i used a screen thay had lying about to block the emergency exit and fire extinguisher. The flash then blocked the bathroom for the building...oh joy.
The pet groomer, michael, brought out a portable grooming stand. for the actual shots we'll use one of his 'good' ones as it will be less wobbly and height adjustable. he kind of held the critters and helped get their attention. I shot in manual mode..started in JPG and then rememberd to try RAW for the extra lattitude of exposure. Auto WB worked, and the hall lights (compact flourescents) were on.
Things I learned:
Animals do not like hats.
the cheap ebay wireless flash triggers work, but do fire at will randomly.
my lighting worked, but more would be better (ISO 200, 1/160, 7-9 ap range)
My lens worked (Tamron SP24-135) well (see the BG in the airedale shot - enough blur for me!)
The BG looked fine in person, but in the pics looks like a dog crate!
Michael thinks anything can be fixed digitally.
Basset hounds do not smile.
If you can't see their eyes, they pics are, umm, boring
Cats are very hard to work with in a strange environment
There is a certain level of stress with having to get teh pic and satisfy a client
This crap is expensive! (optical triggering stuff was $50. a BG cloth and dye was $22, plus i got some snow-like cloth, red ribbons and have more 'set' work to do. I have to print up brochures and make sample 8x10 prints for in-store display...all this with no clue if i will make the money back or not!)
Overall I think this will work out...the hope is for 60-100 clients...who knows for sure. Trying to do 3/hour 4 hours a day. I hope the flash batteries hold up in the lumedyne...no spare for it and no budget to get one. Already had a flash die on me. Need backups!!
Is that enough story? I need to get back to the brochure as i told micheal i'd ahve it and pics tomorrow! Oh man, more stress!

WOW! Talk about stress!
You are right about the animals not feeling safe or wanting to cooperate in strange places.
One thing I found was have Micheal tell the people to walk or play with the dog for about 1/2 hour before coming to work off nervous energy. Have them bring along toys or treats the animals like so there is something familier in the area.
As for hats and such, yep, they don't like them, LOL! You might try ribbons and scarfs and such to add that holiday touch. And talk to the owners, find out what commands the dog/cat does know and make sure you use those same commands. ;)
I can't wait to hear how it all goes.

Scarf! Great idea! I like the Go Play idea too. Will pass that along.
My color printed deicded to not cooperate, so the brochures will be b&w only. Kinkos wants 99c a page to let me print them on their printer. WAY too much for 100 of them, or 200...I guess i will spend my earnings a new color laser. I have inkjets!
Tomorrow i get to pick up the 8x10's i made...I am a bit nervous to see the results, as usual.
This image will be interesting. A BG replacement with a stock shot...ok, my xmas tree from last year, shot with a 3mp Fuji, and then i had to crop (well, free transform it up in size) to make teh BG. It looks good small on the brochure!

An enthusiastic airedal named Boomer. The only dog of the 3 + 1 cat whose name i remember. He was being groomed when i arrived to set up - check his chin - he was excited and befouled his whiskers.
I cold only get one eye at a time..a pirate of a dog, no doubt!
