A95 much better cam.. colours better and sharper IMO.. i find the sony images to be flat. canon also offers better manual features and more upgradable.. my two cents!

When i used to sell cameras I always felt that the Canon's were a better camera than the sony's. I've been out of the game for a year now but I still guess I'd have the same feeling. And 2x zoom?? Why bother in my opinion!

Both cameras seem to have a 38mm-114mm zoom range (i.e. a 3x optical zoom). The 4x/2x zoom is the digital zoom.

Don't be too concerned about digital zoom, you can always crop the picture after you take it.

I always thought that a pull out & twist LCD screen was a silly thing to bother with ... until I got a camera that had one, my Canon Pro 90 IS. Now I am a fan of it and wish more cameras had the feature.

And I'm encouraging people to boycott Sony products because of the issue discussed in this thread: a CD that freezes your computer?

I've only ever used one sony, old 2mp don't remember the model. But I've used a bunch of canons, A60, S100, S200, 300D, and all of them produce great pictures the A series from canon is great, you won't be dissapointed.
another note, I use to fix digital cameras, I'd buy broken ones off ebay, and if you look around probably 50-75% of the broken ones up for sale are sonys.

Canon SD620 uses Secure Digital memory cards, called SD for short. It comes with a 32 megabyte SD card included in the package.

Canon A85 uses Compact Flash memory cards, called CF for short. It comes with a 32 mb CF card included in the package.

dpreview.com is an excellent source for info about the features of various models of digital cameras.

I haven't held or tried the Sony W7, but I have an older model Sony that I've been very happy with. Mostly what I really enjoyed about the Sony was that they controls were easy to use and very intuitive (at least to me).

But my advice (as it was given to me a couple weeks ago!) is to go somewhere and fiddle around with the cameras you're considering and see which one feels best to you.

Also, if you're still considering Sony, have you looked at the DSC-H1? I fiddled with one a couple months ago and it seemed pretty neat. But I don't know how it stacks up to Canon.

As always, www.dpreview.com is a good place to go for resource comparison.

Don't.

There's very little noticable/measurable difference between 7Mp and 5Mp.

Be more concerned about ISO and noise. The more pixels they cram onto the chip, the more prone it is to noise.

Also, the quality of the lens and the ease of use of the camera will affect your shots more than the Mp count.

Hi. I've helped rather a good number of people to buy Canon P&S cameras. My father and sister both own A80's (I actually like them better than the A95) and a few of my friends have purchased A95's at my suggestion. They have been universally happy with their cameras.

The lenses are really decent, the battery life is phenomenal, and you can't go wrong with using CF card. If it doesn't come with a CF card, who cares. They are really cheap and you can pick up a 1GB card for very little these days. Even an older 45x will leave you happy.

DON'T THINK ABOUT MEGAPIXELS!!!!!

The best range of megapixels for a tiny little sensor like that is 4-5MP (In my opinion and DPReview seems slightly less specific about a similar view).

You are really unlikely to be able to do much with 6 or 7MP that you can't do with a 5MP, but there are a few situations where 5MP is arguably a better choice. These are very technical (if you are interested, google "diffraction limitation" and let your eyes be opened) and debatable.

I haven't really felt all that impressed with Canon's new line of cameras. Again, I still feel that there is more that should be done in the 5MP range rather than mucking about with the heavy aperture limitations on the really dense sensors.

The only one that really sticks out to me is the 610 model, which I WOULD DEFINTIELY take over a 620 and possibly over an A95 (I would have to check the lenses and bayonet mounting more carefully. The 610 does have a bayonet adaptor).

I'm guessing that you might have an excellent price on an older model, but the price has come down on the 610 and it would be very wise to check it out before forking out for an A95.

A couple of years ago, the A75 was the king of cheap P&S. Then the A80 was. Then the A95. They all do virtually everything well.

Lately, some other cameras have really shined, but don't seem to be able to offer the same all-around quality and features of these older cams.

Heck, my sister is often able to take better pictures with her A80 than I am with my S2 IS.

Canon VS. Sony (Issues I cannot live with)

AA batteries (500+ shots with 2500mah and available everywhere) VS. Proprietary (short-lived and expensive to replace and buy backups)

CF cards (tied with or surpased by SD for cheapest and fastest format available) VS. SONY brand (slow to market upgrades and MUCH more expensive 1GB 60x Sony cards (claimed, not trusted) grey market for 3000 NT$, compared to 4GB 150x SD card or 4GB 80x CF for around 4000 NT$)

Flip/Twist back screen (invaluable in a crowd, or shooting macro) VS. FIXED

These are 3 incredibly vital decisions in a camera in my opinion. I seldom take a camera out and take less than 100 pics. I often take more than 300 pics in an outing (at which point the sony has long since petered out, but the Canon can still show pics to friends in a coffee shop for an hour or more). I use the Flip/Twist more than 30% of the time when using my sister's camera. I never buy less than 1GB in a storage card. (I've seen 1gb CF's go for like 30 bucks on the net)

The Canon will usually put out better pictures than a Sony, but that cannot be said in every case and in every match-up of like-featured cameras.

#1 choice = Canon 610 or A95 (see
here for more comments on the 610)

Hope it's useful.
