What is the best fabric for backdrops?
From what I heard velvet is best for black.
What would be best for white?

I second Muslns
Velvet is too shiny for a backdrop which reflects your background lights and shows creases to easily unless you are going for that look. |

So Muslins is for white black or both?

You can get them is just about any color you want.

If you are buying proper velvet it shouldnt give you a shine at all no matter what the color, it should also never show creases. That is the main reason I use velvet, because it doesnt reflect/shine. Some of the imitations could be a problem.
If you want something big then muslin is the way to go.
Edit to add : The size of the velvet is the only limitation, it is usually not very wide.

Walmart and otehr fabric stores sells muslin - in the quilting area. The local walmart here has several grades/widths/bleached or unbleached. 90" wide was 3.48/yard and 108" was 4.48 a yard.
I am still working on the dyeing bit. I am using rit dye and trying ror a mottled green BG. So far i have one large olive drab piece of cloth.

I wast told some photographers buy felt. Is that any good?

felt if used for little things would be ok ... BUT it stretches, balls up gets thins in places easily so for a large backgdrop it wouldnt last

Last time I used a matted surface, black Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM). :)
It worked but I wouldn't recommend it (only used it because we have it in stock).

Joanne's is having a sale on muslin right now.
good buy
You can get a bolt (15 yards) of 120" wide white muslin for less than $90. Cut it up, die it different colors and have lots of backdrops for not a lot of money.
I just ordered mine :)

Ahhh, ou are looking at polyester velvet. If you go to a mega fabric store and ask around you'll find at least 3 different types. Ours had polyester at $3.95 a metre (yard) right up to the super-grade one at $39.95 a metre. We got the middle one at about $19.95 and it kills all light stone dead |
