This chrismas I'm going to get a little something for myself.
2 new lenses, looking for input.
I need a wideangle zoom,
and a telephoto zoom. (or prime)
I currently have:
Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
Sigma 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 DC for Canon
I like the 28-105 for alot of things, but it's just not wide enough,
what do you think about the 17-40L F/4? or 17-85mm IS
I need something good for landscapes.
I also need a new zoom, the sigma is alright, but I want something a little longer.
the new canon 70-300mm IS has been getting good reviews and I might like the IS feature. and it would be a nice walkaround size, on the other hand the canon 300mm F/4 IS (more $$$$) but better quality, and larger
I'm not a pro, but I like getting large prints 16x24, so the lens must be sharp!
(all for use on my 300D) |

OP said 28 isn't wide enough.
OP said 200 isn't long enough.

My $0.02
I've got the 17-85 and I'm very happy with it and would recommend.
I would also suggest looking at one of the super wide lens Sigma 10-20 in my case. For landscape shot it opens up a new world.

I'm going to be buying some new lenses soon also. After going back and forth I've pretty much decided:
Canon 100-400L IS - would love the 70-200L 2.8 IS but its just too short.
Tamron 28-75 2.8 - I'll miss between 75-100 but I don't think it will often be a problem.
Canon 10-22 - I hate to buy an EF-S lens but this one has great reviews...

I got the 100-400 this summer and love it, especially with the IS. I found a used one at the camera store, in perfect shape. I saved about 1/3 of the price of a new lens.

If you are considering the 300mm 4f prime, why not go that extra mile and save a little more money and get the 300mm 2.8f prime. I guarentee that you will bee way, way, way more satisfied.
It is truly a very sweet lens.

I have a 17-40 and really like it, but the 17-85 has more range and IS, which could make it a nice walkaround lens. Really the 17-40 is sharper, but the f/4 without IS really hinders it at times.
If you want good telephoto, the poor mans choices are
300 f/4 NON IS (used, they dont make it anymore). This is sharp glass. I shot half an NFL season with it and loved it.
300 f/4 IS New, I hear but can't say for sure it's not as sharp as the non IS. Good glass and IS really makes it pretty useful for lower (but not very low) light environments
Sigma 100-300 f/4. Can't vouch for it, but it's a great range for daylight sports type stuff. I'd get one if I didn't have money and needed reach.

I've learned from other hobbies (car audio) that if you do it right the first time you save money in the long run... so basically I want the best lens (within reason.. I'm not a pro) that fits the ranges I'm looking for. I can see myself upgrading to a full frame body in the next couple years so I'm not sure about the EF-S lenses, sure I could resell later, but I'd like to buy once and keep for a LONG LONG time.
If I had to wait a few more months to get the 2nd lens and only get one at christmas that would be ok two, if there was a pair of lenses worth the $$$$ |

If you plan on full frame, maybe get the 24-70. It's an excellent lens, and 24 is wider than 28 by a reasonable amount, especially on full frame.
After that, I'd say 300 4 IS. The 2.8 is a bit better, but really necessary for the sports people more than anything.

I agree. You've got a nice selection of lenses to start, and may want to get one great lens that costs more than two good lenses. How do you feel about the photos you've taken with the 50 f/1.8 compared to the kit lens you have? This will tell you how sharp a lens you need to get pictures you like.
You're getting a lot of answers here, and each one makes sense for the poster's style of shooting and thier financial situation. What types of pictures are most important to you? Will you need a faster lens? Do you want a telephoto or wide angle more? Is IS or a faster lens more important (that is, do you want IS to handhold a 300mm or f/2.8 to take pictures of moving objects?) What's your total budget?

You may want to look at the Tokina 12-24 as an alternative to the Canon 10-22. I'm very pleased with it as are many others. Some feel it's better quality that the Nikon equivalent.
I'm not a canon shooter so I don;t know about issues with this lens and full frame so apologies if it's inappropriate for that reason.

Well I love the sharpness of the 50 f/1.8 compared to the kit lens.. no comparison, I'd love it if I could find zooms that sharp or sharper. As for speed, I don't really think that's high on the list, the IS would be nice to handhold at 300mm and there's nothing I shoot (other than the odd bird that moves very fast)
I'd say I want the wide angle more, that's what's on my camera most of the time.
As for budget, by x-mas about $1500-2000 cad (roughly 1250-1666US)
That should buy ATLEAST one good lens. (I hope) |
