I dunno, considering that most of them were obviously lighted and then the athlete came into the shot and did a trick for the camera, isn't this more like.... i dunno.
Action Portraiture?

Being landlocked in ole' KC, it's probly hard to know how the sun interacts with the ocean.
Some of the best pix I've seen in surfing magazines, and my personal goal, is to use some flash off shore during dusk so that the sun is backlighting the subject, and getting a nice key from the flash.
Call it what you want, but I agree with petrakka, these are really nice shots.

Very cool shots--
One thing I find just a tad annyoning though is that some of the kites in the background look like a crescent moon that is outta place, kinda weird.. |

Er, is it just me, or were these taken on a lake, not the ocean?
I made no opinions about the shots, I think they're great. I have little hope of being able reproduce their remarkable quality.
But I still think they look a little set up instead of traditional sports photography where you have to "catch a moment" to get a good shot. I guess it could be that he just set up flash in a boat and took what he could get though. From looking at the other gallery, where some of the athletes are actually mugging for the camera, I'd bet I'm right that he got them to to tricks for the camera, as it were.
If anything though, his shots at skatepix.de are even more impressive, and more set up than some of these.
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with these shot being set up. I'm just saying it's a whole lot easier to capture that trick when you told the trckster what to do is all, and IMO takes it a little off center from pure sports photography.

Kinda looks like studio shots. How many pictures to make one? |

Almost every skateboard shot you see in a magazine is set up like that too. Call it whatever you wanna call it, but the scene of skateboard shots is like a mini studio. The photographer knows what trick the skater is gonna do, he knows where the skater will be coming, He has lights set up before hand, meters the exposure before hand, everything is planned.
Action photography is about 'catching the moment' but with the sports that allow you to do so (Ie most individual sports) it's more than just that, it's about using your resources to make creative dramatic images with good lighting. This guy had flashes in the water in water housings triggered with pocket wizards etc.
It's not pure photojournalism, but it is damn good imagery to me.
These were taken on a lakes in egypt and eastern europe.
I've shot a lot of traditional sports (ie football, wrestling, volleyball) and while it's hard to get good shots doing that, skate photography is pretty difficult in getting the timing perfect and also setting up good lighting. What he's doin isn't any less difficult than shootin a football in my opinion. But that's just me, I'd rather look at The Skateboard Mag over Sports Illustrated any day, cuz I just think they're photography is better. It's a more thought out beginning to end product. |
