Do you comment on photos during the challenge? And if yes, what happens if you are assigned a photo that you gave a less than glowing comment on or just did not like? Do you request a different image?

What do you do if you get assigned an image you just don't like at all, as in just cannot see why it was submitted as opposed to just not liking it?

What do you do if you get assigned an image taken by a 'friend' - real or online?

Just curious. As this is my first week, and only @25 critiques so far, I know this is going to happen sooner or later. I would hate to get assigned an image I really didn't like and believe it or not, so far that hasn't happened. I figure I am pushing the envelope in that regard at this point.

And as a side note...I like the Critique Club much better than just leaving a comment during the challenge. So far I have averaged 33 minutes a critique - yes I am that much of a geek/wierdo/stat freak that I keep track of these things.

Sometimes I do comment during challenges. The CC does not affect that at all. If I get one that I have already commented on, I will just try to expand on my original comment a bit. If I get one that I just do not like, I try to tell them why I don't like it. I figure if they want a critique, my "not liking" it will at least tell them what part of the population here thought.

I try to comment on all that I get. If I absolutely cannot comment on it, I would just contact hbunch, and request another one. That would be more fair than just sitting on it.

If I get assigned an image by a friend, and I do not htink I coudl be objective, I would ask for another one.

Whether I like the image or not doesn't play into if I can critique it. If I don't like it, I will say its not my taste. That's all - Not the image's problem, mine. And then I go on and explain what I think works and doesn't work. My critique is longer if the photographer filled out all the information and included editing steps, shorter if they didn't.

Although I have just started with CC, I have to agree with dahkota's post. I try to adopt the same approach. I find it easier to be constructive as I am looking at the images in a more critical way, not on preference. If they appeal to me, then I will say so, likewise if they don't. But I do not let my own likes taint the critique.

I find that I have commented less due to PM's etc, CC allows me to review and comment in more detail also. Like dahkota said, when someone has included all info and editing steps, my critiques tend to be fuller as I don't have to try and second guess steps used.

Yes, but in nowhere near as much detail as I used to. I used to randomly give multi-paragraph critiques (similar to how I do CC critiques) to images during a challenge. Now I just give 2-4 sentance comments on images that I really have something to say about. I reserve my long critiques for the CC images.

No I do not request a different image. I have a set format that I use for CC images, that touches on all the major areas: composition, relation to challenge, technical, etc. I don't go into all that in my regular comments any more.

I may say that I don't personally like it, or that I don't know why it was submitted, but my critique "template" always focuses my critique on the areas that matter. Even if a photo sucks, you can still comment on the composition or the lighting or something. I see you've got a template as well, and I think your critique of "love" by erainman is a great example of how to handle critiquing "challenged" entries.

Honestly, I have'nt been here long enough to form any serious friendships with other site members that would influence my critique. The only way this could happen is if I got one that my wife did, in which case, I would probably give an honest critique!

After a quick review of your critiques, I'd say you're doing great! You've far surpassed my output already, and the quality of your critiques is spot on!

'Challenged entries' - I like that phrase...I will have to keep that in mind. Thanks for the answers and the compliments. I do appreciate them.

Thanks to all others as well.
