I just bought a collapsible reflector and when I opened it...it literally sprung to 4x its size. I didn't really pay attention to how it was folded and I can't figure out how to fold this thing. It feels like I'm going to break it. Is there a correct way of folding one of these things? I don't want to break it.

Thanks

If it's spring-loaded around the rim like those things you put in car windshields as sunscreens, then I think you can just fold them anywhere -- they don't so much fold as twist into tighter coils.

I bought silver windshield sunscreens at Costco to use as reflectors : )

There's also a small spring-loaded laundry hamper which I think can be adapted into a foldable softbox.

Usually you start by grabbing each side and twisting, like you are trying to make a figure eight. Then, as you bring your hang together, it folds into a smaller circle. It shouldn't feel like you are forcing it, but it does take a few attempts to get the motion down.

Good luck!

If its a traditional round refector most can be twisted into a figure-8 then folded back on itself.

there should be a directiosn sheet with your reflector ? Twist it in opposite directions ... to a figure eight... then bring your hands closer to each other... you'll see one side try to go in the middle ( i'm sitting here iwth a 12 inch reflector tryign to explain this to you ...

How much are these official photo reflectors? My windshield protector (2 circles, each just under 3 feet diameter) cost under $8.

GeneralE, check out bhphotovideo or adorama for prices. i have a dynaphos 32" that cost me around 40. the difference between windshield protectors and photo reflectors is the different layers, most have 5 layers: white, silver, gold, gold/silver mix, and translucent scrim

I see. I was able to get some which are plain silver, matte from the fabric on one side and a little shiny from a coating on the other.

I've never actually gotten around to using them as anything but windshield protectors up until now : )
