After much debate about size vs. advanced features, I'm thinking about buying an SD400 Digital Elph as my purse cam. However, in looking at the specs on B&H and on Canon's website, it says under Exposure Modes: "Program AE, Exposure Compensation (+/-2.0 stops in 1/3 stop increments), AE Lock, FE lock" and under Shooting or Scene Modes: "Auto, Manual, Digital macro, Portrait, Night snapshot, Kids & Pets, Indoor, Underwater, My Colors, Stitch assist, Movie modes (Standard, Fast Frame Rate, Compact, My Colors)".

I want to verify that it does indeed have manual exposure. I shoot entirely manual with my SLR so I don't want to be stuck with only auto on this. Can anyone help me out? Also, if it does have true manual exposure, how easy is it to get to? Am going to have to navigate a bunch of menus every time I turn the thing on in order to get it into manual mode?

Manual exposure is critical for me, so if I can't find it in a pocket cam, I may sacrifice size a bit and go for the S60.

My understanding, from playing with my friend's is that it's not really manual.

Look at the S80 or S70, a bit bigger, but they have true manual mode.

I have (or better stated my has) a older digital elph. Although is can take quite good photos, one is entirely at the mercy of the camera.

I'd take a good luck at the new Olympus
SP-350. Full manual controls, infact its chose with a dial on top of the camera, not buried in a menul like some. It even has a hot shoe for external flash, and its just a hair bigger than the elph.

Thanks guys. The SP-310 is now on my shortlist (310 since it's cheaper than the 350 and seems essentially the same minus a megapixel (still more than my D70)). The only thing that might lean me toward the S60 is that it takes compact flash, which I'm already invested in with the D70, but it is a bit bigger and I'd like to stay as small as possible since my purse isn't huge. Unless someone can tell me the Digital Elphs do have real manual controls, I may opt for the Olympus. I'll look around in the stores a bit here to see what I can play with, but there aren't many options where I live so it's hard to get my hands on things.

I'll add to the "not really manual" crowd. What settings you have must be accessed from the menu system making it awkward. However, it is a great pocket camera that does well on auto where ours stays most of the time.

I have an Elph S410 for my purse - it takes a nice picture but has no manual settings, A Priority or S Priority. In the Program mode you can set a few things but the camera always gets to pick the aperture and shutter speed. That being said, it does take a very nice picture, I've never been disappointed in the snaps I take with it.

My husband got me a new purse cam for our anniversary - a Canon A610, it's bigger (not a whole lot though) and has all the manual settings and lots of preset things too like fireworks, beach and all sorts of stuff. So far, I've only taken a few pictures with it (quick snaps) and it does a very nice job.
