Great job to everyone and congrats to the winners :) However I felt that there were images that just desrved a second look.

73rd seems way too low

Eleventy-first place? This was one of my favorites from the challenge.

In my opinion, there were a bunch I had rated pretty high. Those all scored down near mine. And of course, I expected higher for my own.

Only 17 places from the Brown Ribbon... What the heck, wouldn't anybody like to hang this on their wall?
:-P

No thanks required for me but thanks to the great entries again for this challenge and the Delicate challenge. With 5 new first time ribbon winners, goes to show the bar has been raised once again.

Some entries just deserve another look as often times it just gets buried in the mix :D

Thanks Nullix.

I was surprised by the challenge results, too. Many of the ones mentioned here were ones I rated much higher and was stunned when I saw where they placed. Only 3 that I gave an 8 or 9 even made it in the top 20, and I had quite a few of those in this challenge. This is the first time my voting has been so far 'off' the general consensus. I'm glad to see I'm not alone, though.

Edit: can't spell this morning :)

I don't know what you are complaining about soni, your photo didn't 100x better than mine did.

I just get confused sometimes because people who rate your photo well are the only ones who comment. But that doesn't give any explanation on why my photo didn't do that well. It's kind of frustrating to which people turned out to be winners in the top 10, they all seemed relatively identical. I also don't understand how some of the voters vote. Is it about how pretty it is? Is it about how perfect it is for you professionals? Or is it about how uncreative it is? Can someone let me know how you vote and maybe I can understand why I placed the way I did.

If you want to see the pic I did, it was entitled Maxx. Let me know your opinions...

Speaking of whining, Angela Packard, geez, 74%, 10 comments, and a fave, with a respectable 5.495, way above your average, for a pet photo, which often seems to, like photo's of kids, run afoul of a certain block of voters who dont like them. This taken into account, I'd sy your photo did very well, you should be content with its placement.

"Maxx" received a slightly above average vote from me. What held it back were the eyes--they absolutely must be in focus! It would help if the dog weren't looking like he was ready to escape at the very first opportunity as well. The photographer did attempt to take this beyond the typical living room / yard shot - but that's the time that little details (like the dirt in front of the dog) make a large difference. Expression, pose, personality...all need to come through in a shot of this type in order to be successful. (Just my honest opinion.)

Here's the one I entered and had to pull due to losing the original RAW files - what a plonker!

Hey, watch it! Yours was the best..just because I know the dog personally! :-))

and see I thought the 2nd and 3rd were light (unlike mine that wasn't light enough) but I was bummed by 1st. It is a great picture overall but I read the details as saying "a light color" and I don't consider b/w as a light color (when mixing pigments I thought you had to remove color to get white which would mean NO color). Of course this is what won the last time this challenge came up too so I guess I'm wrong. Just my opinion, they were all certainly technically perfect.

I guess I did not understand the challenge. I did not think my entry was this bad. I only recieved two comments on this. So what is the problem?

11/02/2005 11:02:27 AM · #24
I thought "light on white" meant a light color on white.... not white on white.
Most of the pictures were white on white
11/02/2005 11:05:45 AM · #25
I think all of our lessons from this should be: Light on white, is hard to get right.

Also: white background, not a light shade of grey. I realized that my entry was also just a tidge grayish, which didn't help (besides the fact that it was just uninspired)

Although I think voters were being particularly rough around the edges on this challenge, I think we all can agree that we learned, or need to learn something here.

Here's my 205th place entry:
