I will be ordering the Olympus E-500 this friday hopefully. I'll have enough on my gift card to buy memory but I have no idea what to get!
compact flash
Is this going to be enough? |

I don't think I would go under 1g with a DSLR. I shot mostly RAW and fill a 256 fast on my 5050. I'm sure you are going to need more...oh and you can never have "enough" in my books.
btw...I'm totally jealous about you getting the 500, I have watched the 300 for a long time and then that one too. I want one too if you find you have extra extra money ;)

I don't think so.
At least, minimum, 512.

I think 256MB is a bit small.
I'd buy 2 or more 512MB or 1GB cards, whichever gives you the most capacity/$. I have 2 512MB cards and occasionally run out of space shooting RAW.

lol sorry about that I did not even see that you were talking about the olympus, no thats not enough memory you will need at least a 1gb card especially if you want to take raw photos. Even not taking photos in raw you will need more memory.

512 or 1Gb.
You can get them on sale / with a rebate most any week at staples/circuit city/bestbuy/egghead.com/zipzoomfly.com.
My sandisk 512 cards cost me $30 or so, my 1Gb card was $60 something. I use the 512 cards most of the time. If i am out all day or have an event then i use the 1Gb card. I takes a while to DL to hte computer when full! |

Are you using USB 2.0? My 512MD card DL's in well under a minute using my card reader when full.

Ty Ty
So go for the 512 then? That's about all I have money for right now lol.
Sab, I wouldn't even be getting this camera- or another period for that matter, if it were not for a very dear friend. She has adopted me as her daughter for the most part and this is my christmas present - for hubby and I- but more for me lol.
I wouldn't be buying a new camera till tax return time if then since we have our daughter tuition to look forward to for next year. Private schools aren't cheap! |

Too small AND too slow. I suggest you get THIS one. |

Tis the memory I have, seems to be fast enough with my 20d, although only 119 shots in raw! I wouldn't get anything lower than a 1GB with that DSLR.

i have to get it at best buy. That's who I have the gift card for. They don't have that one at best buy. They do have a 512Mb though. |

The cheapest 512MB hi-speed CF card at Best Buy will cost you more than the 1GB card I pointed out. Offer the gift card to someone else for a few dollars less and get the 1GB. No sense in wasting your money. |

A 1 gig card with the e-500 will give you 159 photos in SHQ 3264x2448 mode or more importantly 58 in RAW 3264x2448 mode, so I don't think 256mb will do the trick. I use 1gb sandisk extreme II & III cards because I've had good luck with the brand and its what Costco sells ($89 - 1gb). I wish more manafacturers would make 640 or 700mb cards so it wouild perfectly fit on CD-Rs for backup, but Delkin is (was?) the only one and they are WAY over priced for the size.
I'm glad your looking at compact flash for the camera instaed of xD-Picture cards. Several reviews state that the write times are alot slower for the xD-Picture cards. |

I suppose I shall have to save my money for the 1GB then. Right now money is VERY tight with the holidays coming up and the extra cash isn't around for extra money. Hence why I was looking for SOMETHING that would work from Best Buy. |

You don't need to shoot at the highest quality level all the time. For routine family snapshots a lower quality level will do very nicely and pack a LOT of images on that 512Mb card. I used my 20D for couple months with only two 256Mb cards and got along fine. I just bought a 1 Gb card last week, and it's ample for me. You can always rack your quality level up when you need to for special shots.

The 20D prouces images of 3504x2336 pixels, approximately equal in size to what the E500 produces. A little larger, actually. in RAW format I can store 110 or so images in 1Gb. Why should the Olympus only produce half as many? Are you sure you're not reading a "RAW+JPG" figure there? When I shoot RAW + best quality JPG I can only fit in half the images as RAW alone.

I'm getting so many helpful tips around here lately lol.
I'm going to wait to get my camera after the 15th. I don't want to risk ordering it and have it show up when we are out of town. Plus it will be another payday then and I'll have a little more money to work with.
If I get two 512 CF's I'm thinking that will do for now.

2 SanDisk Ultra II 512's.
The read/write times on the Ultra II are day & night over standard SanDisk cards. Personally I don't want to go out shooting with a single 1GB card, and would rather have 2 - 512's. Card errors, lost card / damaged cards do happen and would rather not lose all of a days shooting, plus they are not that expensive. Just my opinion.

1GB isn't enough for a full day if you shoot RAW. I am personally looking at another 1GB or a 512MB card.
My experience has been that I like the larger card, because you have to switch less, and no doubt otherwise you run out of shots on the card just when you need to take a critical moment! (Or it's freezing cold out and the last thing you want to do is to take your gloves off and change cards.)
The Kingston Pro 512 card is now available for about $23 after rebates from Buy.com. I'm tempted to try it. I agree the Sandisk Ultra II is very fast. But I seldom shoot "rapid fire", so I wonder myself if I can fathom going a little slower for the "secondary" card, the one that's only used when I run out of space!

I have two 1 GB 80X Lexar CF cards, one 1 GB 40X Lexar, three 512 MB SanDisk, one 256 MB SanDisk II, and two 128 MB cards. I also have the Epson P-2000 for photo storage. You can never have too much. I routinely shoot 3 GB of photos in a day.

I'm so lost lol
My lil p&s has extra memory- have no idea what because I didn't care when I bought it. But I can shoot 36 pics on the memory ON the camera, and I have no idea how many on the extra memory because I've never shot that many. i've done over 100 pics on the extended memory though. |
