I'm thinking of getting a flash for my D70. Current choice is SB600 or SB800. I would use for general photos such as birthday parties and other indoor and outdoor gatherings.

I would also use it for insect and flower macro work.

Any opinions or suggestions on these two flashes. Do you like others?

Thanks,

I have the SB600. Love it. Great battery life. Why spend the extra $100 if you are going to use it for general photography?

I was starting to read up on the SB800. What are the main differences? As of today I would get the 600 unless someone can convince me otherwise.

One advantage of the SB-800 is the -7 degree angle adjustment. This can be very useful when doing close up work. With the D70 in commander mode you can use the SB-800 off camera for macro. (I'am not sure if the 600 can do this.) For general shooting the extra power means better DOF or faster shutter speeds. If doing party's there is the option to add a fifth battery for quick recycling times.

After reading more in the sb600 it looks like this flash can be used "off camera" as a remote flash. The SB600 can be triggered by the built in flash on the d70. Am I reading this correctly?

Baxter...do you have any samples in your portfolio using the 800?

The on camera flash can trigger an SB 800 or 600, in ITTL mode. The 800 offers the 7 degree adjustment and full manual control, which can be very useful.

To remote fire the flash...does the sb have to be "facing" the D70 or can it be "behind" or "above" the D70?

Thanks

Baxter...I viewed those photos and like them. Did you use the SB600 and your D70? Any other equipment or "high" priced lenses used?

Thanks

Can be used beside (right or left) and above (below if you wanted) and depending on how close you are to a reflective subject, behind the camera.

I first bought the 600, and traded it in for the 800 after a couple of days. So no I do not have any samples of the 600. The lenses used for the shots you looked at were an 80-400VR (birds, butterfly) with the flash mounted on tha camera, and a 60 macro, for the worm and spyder with the flash hand held, camera in commander mode.

Thanks Baxter,

I have that same 60mm macro with a D70. After looking at your photos I think I will splurge and get the 800.

Thanks again,

Kenskid

Just remembered I used the SB-800 mounted on the camera for the monkey also.
