Well, ebay has been berry berry good to me, to paraphrase an old SNL character, so I treated myself ot an ealsy birthday present. AKA, Impatience and instant gratification win again ;)
Tamron SP AF24-135mm Macro 3.5-5.6 AD Aspherical (IF)
It was between this and the Canon 28-135 IS USM. This was in stock locally for a near mailorder price. I tried the Canon 17-85 USM..wow. But i wanted the extra reach for my walkaround lens.
Some first day samples:
A simple portrait
It focuses in extreme darkness pretty well.
I didn't realize it was a macro lens too. A true walkaround lens!
An artsy abstracty shot.
Early conclusion: fast accurate focus, very stiff zoom, very nice macro (with no switch to flip like my Sigma 70-300). Sharpness is very good, color is acceptable - a tad cool for my tastes but PS can tune that right up and contrast seems good. A bit early for a complete review, but I am quite satisfied.

When looking for a lens, i found nothing negative about this lens. Now i know why! this is a great lens!
It can focus in almost complete darkness (as this shot shows) and is sharp and fast and accurate focusing, nice color and great contrast.
Here are a two more, including a 100% crop of a macro shot.
