I bought a Canon Rebel recently and noticed something strange when I take a picture with a high shutter speed. Specifically, when I take a pic with the shutter speed set at 1/4000, the top half of the pic is dark. At 1/2500, the top 1/4 is dark and it seems to be okay with speeds slower than 1/1250.

Any ideas what is happening? I might add that all of the pics were outdoors with no flash. Thanks for your time.

Is the line between the dark area and the image area kind of fuzzy? If it's pretty fuzzy, I suspect the mirror is not making it up before the shutter trips.

It is fuzzy. Your explanation sounds very plausible. Thanks.

I'd exchange the cam.
