Ahhh so now we're getting somewhere. I'll get a polarizer for the sun. Also...should I get an external flash or is the one on the D70 good enough?

An external flash will make a big difference, but you'll want to diffuse it some. A bounce card that attaches to the flash head, like the Lumiquest pocket bouncer, is a great tool. Make sure you get a flash that allows you to rotate the head upward as if you wer going to bounce it off the ceiling. It should also allow you to rotate the head left or right.
