Sometimes we are just lucky.
My camera has been playing up a bit and the auto-focus just stopped working. So manual focus at 500 mmm. And I wear specs which I don't use when taking pictures. A bit of hit and miss with the focus then. And some good (lucky?) timing.
From last night's 2nd ODI between SA and NZ.
Smith bowled Styris:
Prince bowled Vettori:
Cheers

Well timed shots!
And for my own interst, how much of a crop are those images, and how far from the boundary were you? Where you right out at 500mm?
I've got to start shooting some cricket in the next few weeks and I'm wondering about lenses for the job.. (ie: I'm in shopping mode!)
Cheers, Me.

The Smith dismissal is uncropped. The Prince dismissal has about 1/8 cropped off left and top. Both at 500mm using the Sigma 50-500 lens. I was sitting in a corporate box (about three stories up) about 20m from the boundary. Not the ideal place because you lose sense of depth and end up with legs of people at the top of the frame and heads of people at the bottom.
Aren't New Zealand grounds very small ... you'll only need 50mm ... hee hee ...
I had the same problem trying to shoot rugby from the equivalent of the 7th floor at Newlands rugby stadium. Here's a couple from the last Tri-Nations.
Cheers

:-). Not quite, but there are a couple of grounds that are used for 2nd grade games that have trees within the boundary...

I do my sports from the sideline, so I don't quite have that problem! Although I was standing on a chair for some tennis last weekend, if that counts.
I shot my first cricket game for the paper this weekend, and although I try quite hard to resist being a 'gear head' I'm now reading reviews and gawking at spec sheets trying to wreak havoc on my Credit card..
My longest lens currently is the 70-200, and it's not enough to make me happy with the shots. It's fine for the paper though, they can crop out 500px wide and still get an OK result. I'd just like to be able to do some decent prints if I'm going to have to sit through many more cricket games this summer!
Nice timing with that second rugby shot too, it woulda looked quite neat from lower down, say the 3rd floor. :-).
Cheers, Chris H.

Napping is the correct term...
I was at a game on Sat. for 30 minutes and I think there were 10 runs made in that time. It was a bit of a 'hit and run' by me, as I had to be at another event, but the small bit that I saw was snooze-fest material.
Cricket is not very big locally, this was a senior A grade game and there were exactly 2 spectators, plus me.
Cheers, Chris H.
