I can't believe you'd need to check with a calculator - don't people get taught in school any more ?

Unfortunately not. My nephew (recent HS grad) was STRONGLY encouraged to use a calc in his HS math class. There was even a section in their book on the calculator.

I, and then my dad, tried to explain to him that math is much faster and easier when done in the head or on paper.

My niece is now taking HS math. Same gig - NEED the calc, straight from the teacher's mouth.

:(

I guess that's why all our hiring is in India & China now...

My daughter had to have a $180 calculator this year for a HS honors calc. class - if its public school... why do I have to buy..... ugh! another rant!

I am a computer engineer, so math is my thing .. I also had couple of beers, I got 4080 the first time.. I went and got a third beer, redid the calculation then got 5000 like everyone else, I guess the lesson here is beer improve math .. I am drinking Sierra Nevada Stout by the way, best black beer in my opinion ..

It's a natural twist the brain does.
More people will end up at 5000 than 4100 on this. Nothing to do with being taught math in school.

I got 4100, but I read the problem, realized it just asked me to add them all up, then went through and did just that, not re-reading the directions. If you step through it and add as you go, the directions distract your mind from the mechanics of adition, specifically carrying the 1 when the tens column exceeds 9.

Good grief, I'm such the dork engineer.......................

Now this is why I spend so much of my time rechecking the results from fancy analysis software packages....

In India when I was studying, I never used a calculator before college. We were taught how to use the log tables for difficult multiplication/divisions problems. I for one didn't like the log table and only practiced on my own and could mulitply 2 3-digit numbers without writing anything on paper ( execpt the answer ofcourse :)) No I am not that good anymore.

4100, first try w/o reading other posts. Don't get it.

edit - oh, yeah, I get it. I never add things in the order I'm told to. I added all the 1000's and then the others after, hehe.

Old joke, but now let's put a DPC twist on it!

Take f/8, 1/250, ISO 400, add 2 f-stops, stop down 1/3....

I came up with 4100 from scanning it too...so I read in order and kept getting 5000 until I figured out what I was doing! Very cool effect!

I actually had some man do this "trick" on me in a bar one night.
He bet me a drink.
But it's so obvious when someone bets you something in a bar that there has to be a catch to it.
I did want to blurt out 5,000, but being Mr. Skeptical I made myself think just a few seconds more and realized what the mistake was.
He bought me a beer, which was good.
The bar tender fell for it though.

After reading about 5000 as an answer, I tried to see how and I never got 5000 as an answer, only 4100 ! Something's wrong with me I think
