In several threads people take someone's picture, make changes and post it back in the thread. Is there a way to post the new image without adding it to my portfolio?

Only by posting it to an external site and linking to it.

No, unless you post it on another site. What you really want to do is to post it to your "workshop" folder in your DPC portfolio. That way, it will not show up on "recently added" and will not be casually browsable. What I've done is to create a folder within my workshop folder, called "Others' Photos" and I place these edits in that folder.

You can hide it in your portfolio so it doesn't appear on your profile page, if that helps.
