Greetings -
I'm looking to upgrade my 3-year-old Nikon Coolpix 775 to something a bit better. Here's some of the things I'm interested in:
1. price range: sub-$600, preferably around $400-500
2. Anything more than the 2.1 megapixels I currently have
3. 10X or more optical zoom
4. Decent macro
5. Good low-light capability: I tend to shoot at concerts
6. No proprietary battery (major annoyance in my Nikon!)
Am debating the merits of the Canon Powershot S2 and the new Fuji Finepix S5200. Are there any others I should take a look at? Also, could any users of the Canon or Fuji speak to their likes/dislikes?
While the temptation to leap to an SLR exists I'm cognizant that my skillset isn't quite developed to take full advantage. |

I had a Fuji S602 (big brother so the 5200, replaced by teh s7000 and now the s9500/s9000).
You can get a used s7000 for well into your price range. In the US the s9000 is under $600.
The earlier Fujis took AA batts, could be enhanced with extra lenses (more like filters) and would take filters, could fire via hotshoe, had auto and manual modes, and great movie modes.
The macro mode on the Fuji cams is outstanding.
Info on the s9000
Specifically to address your concerns:
9.1 Mp
f2.8to 11 lens (good for low light, plus has a focus assist beam)
10.7x zoom (28-300mm equivalent)
takes CF and xD cards
realtime histogram
takes AA batts |
