I'm starting a business, need a logo, and would love to employ someone from this site to help me do it, rather then giving my money somewhere else. Does anybody do this for a living?
Thanks!

There are a few designers on this site. What's your budget?

Is that a good ouch or a bad ouch? We sort of have an idea of what we want it to look like, but I'd like the designers opinion too.

200 bucks is low in the "real world" for designing a logo from scratch. Those who actually make a living at this sort of stuff wouldn't touch it. But you're only 19, I can understand why your funds would be more limited. There should be some help available for you here at that price.

Howdy Watermark;

I work with a company called Photoworks Creative Group in Charlottesville, Va

Normally we are a company that agencies and marketing departments hire (special contractor) but for a fellow DPC'er..we can accomodate
:-)

We handle Bank of America, BB&T, University of Virginia sports, Wyeth Pharmacuetical (they make Advil and Robitussen), Hanes Corp and the U.S. Department of Defense etc..etc. along with about 20 years of design, photography and exhibit experience. We work with companies all over the United States so we are used to not having the client sitting in our offices to get a job done.

We charge $95 an hour. Depending on how far your company is in the process determines total hours. We start at a minimum of 4 hours. 3 consultation sessions are included along the way. A combination of hard proofs and pdf's are used at $20 per hard proof/pdf (Lightjet output for color correction)

A portfolio of clients

Just noticed by your profile this might be a bit steep :-/

Run your ideas by us all here, maybe we can help you out pro-bono :-D

The first thing you have to do is decide what kind of business you want for now and what you want to grow into.
Your logo should be suitable for whatever market segment you're aiming at.
For instance, someone who wants to do corporate style advertising wouldn't have the same type of logo as someone who does a lot of rock band shoots, or a wedding photographer....
Decide on where you feel comfortable starting out, and something that keeps an eye out for growth later on.
Factors to think of... Age range of customer... Financial range..
... Education.... Locale....
These are some of the things that a competent professional designer will discuss with you... Do your homework first...

I agree with Robert, $200 is a bit low, however there are probably several of us who would consider it depending on the complexity you are expecting. I'll give you an idea of a logo concept I'm working on (it's still a work in progress) that will go for about that amount of money:

By the way, it's an Illustrator document created from scratch with the Photoshopped runner added to the AI file as an additonal layer. Interesting side note: the runner is also the client, and happens to be a 4-time Olympic medalist! Robert may think that $200 for this is low, and he would be correct. However, I work for myself and sometimes take on big jobs for less than I shoulds (cuz I needs the money).
