So, this is what happens when I am bored...
I've always known which of my lenses were sharper/softer, but I've never actually compared them... This is what I got:
(100% crop at center, all at f/5)
Canon EF 35-105mm f/4.5-5.6
Canon EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Interesting.... |

The 35-105 seems noticably soft, the only difference between the 28-80 and 50 is that the 50's shot seems brighter.

That's not surprising...Prime lenses will almost always be sharper than zooms, not to mention that the 50mm f/1.8 is stopped down close to 3 stops at f/5 whereas the other 2 zooms are almost wide open if not completely wide open... |

I wasn't really suprised... I did think about reshooting the samples at f/8, but decided that I wasn't quite that bored... |

if you look at the writing on the bottom of the green book (right of center) there is a very big difference between even the 28-80mm and 50mm.. also the "map" is much sharper with the 50mm 1.8 II Pretty much the same results I've gotten with the same lens, no wonder it's so popular!! |

The 50 is the best no doubt, but when I looked at the first one I figured you didn't have it focused properly, I would have thought it would be better than that. Thanks for the test results |

All of these, as well as the previous are in focus...
Here are the rest of the shots I took... Yes, I know I compared an 'L' lens to a cheapo, but I was bored. Not stupid, just bored...
(100% crop at f/5-5.6)
Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 USM at 28mm
Canon EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 V USM at 28mm
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0L USM at 100mm
Canon EF 35-105mm f/4.5-5.6 at 100mm
