Never have posted a post voting photo before, but figured I would join the "fun" as I too am a bit confused as to the reason for scoring this so low. It is a moving, breathing animal (okay, bug), and dangerous also. Did he not fill the "what"? This is under 1/2 inch long, taken on concrete - grains of sand are visible, and I was not about to try to move him. He was moving fast enough by himself and I wanted to get the pic!! LOL Oh, well, any comments are more than welcomed, kinda hoped for now!!

Unfortunately folks are use to sharp pictures posted at the site. If it was a more in focus higher scores might have been issued.

Looks like William Shatner has encountered a windy day :P

I am new to photography and this board, but could you or someone else explain to me why that photo is not sharp? I can see the grains of sand very clearly and the individual hairs on that thing with no problem - I voted this one medium high and was surprised it scored so badly. I really would like to understand why it is thought to be not sharp enough? Thanks.

Just because you can see details doesn't mean they are sharp. The image is not critically sharp anywhere that I can see; not surprising when you consider how close he must have been to this half-inch critter, and hand-holding. Anyway, here's a variation that's been run through Unsharp Mask in Photoshop to crisp it up; oversharpened, actually, but it illustrates the point.

I didn't vote on this challenge, but I think as well as the sharpness issues discussed, it seems like not a very stimulating point of view in the image. It appears just straight on, like here is this neat creature I found on the ground so I took a shot of it. Perhaps getting down low, on it's level, or something like that could strengthen it also.

Thanks for the discussion, btw, that WAS at his level, or as close as I could get to it, remember the size of this creature is SMALL!! Anyway, I did run a sharpen (high pass, I think it was) on this image, and when I did another pass, either with usm or high pass, it came out looking oversharpened to me, but will try to do better next time, of course. I did realize it was probably not going to medal, but I honestly thought it was better than the average shot on this challenge, obviously many disagreed LOL.
