i just bought my rebel a little over a week ago and i am getting used to the features on it pretty well...it'll be awhile before i start posting photographs on here, as i don't know how to use any photo editing software...i'm planning on getting aperture in dec when it comes out. my question is what lens i should get my for my rebel. i got the kit so it has the 18-55 lens it came with, and really that is the only size lens i have ever used. now i am either looking for an all in one type lens where i can get decent macro and long range shooting, or i might be able to get 2 seperate ones....all depending on price. now the long range shots would be shots at like the zoo. nothing to critical but i do like to get really up close shots. any input would be greatly appreciated

The Sigma 75-300mm lens zooms in really close and can take 1:2 macros. It's a little soft at the upper end, but it's very affordable and does everything you asked for.

toss 60 bucks at the canon 50mm 1.8, best bang for the buck in glass there is. Good for portraits and any low light situation. |

Congrats on the new camera - it really is pretty user friendly.
The 18-55mm lens it came with really is a decent lens, especially at the wider angles.
Regarding a second lens, I highly recommend (as do MANY others here) the Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di.
It's very fast, (F2.8 at 28 through 75mm) light, and does a pretty decent job at macros.
Click on the lens link above and see what shot shave been done with it, who owns one and follow their username to their portfolios for more samples. Very good value and it rarely leaves my 350D.

I'd agree with Brad on that one; the tammy is one of the very best lens values out there. However, it does mostly overlap your 18-55, so it might not be the best choice for your first supplementary lens.
My lenses: Canon 10-22mm, Tamron 28-75mm, Canon 60mm Macro, Canon 70-200 f/4L...

Here are a couple of links I liked most while doing my researh on Canon lenses:

Your choice depends a lot on depth of your pocket.
Personally I have kit lens, EF 50 1.8 II and waiting for new EF 70-300 IS USM. This will make my "economy" lens set. And then I will probably look for macro lens. And, of course, I would love to own some L category lens, like 17-40 L4, 70-200 L2.8 IS... . Pretty costy hobby, ha?
Edit: My copy of 70-300 IS USM has arrived! I'm in a seventh heaven! It's perfect! I was so impressed by IS (image stabilization) that I couldn't refuse and purchased 17-85 IS USM as well - to replace my kit lens. Well, I'll need a very good explanation to my wife, I suppose...
