Quick question... I was preparing my photo for one of the current challenges and while I was editing I hit 'save' (it's a habit b/c photoshop is about all I do at work). Anway, this means I erased over the original file with the one I was working on. I went back to the original photo in the history and resaved it so that techincally no editting was done to the photo. The problem is that the time the picture was taken will be logged a few hours before when the 'last modified' header will show.

Make sense? Will this get me DQ'd?

"Time" wise you won't get DQ because you are still within the time frame of the challenge...however...I think there are ways to see that the photo is the true original. You may have done yourself in by hitting save and not renaming the photo.

I can't be sure though....someone will know...keep watching thread!

I'm afraid you've kinda screwed yourself... once you've saved over the original, it's not an original any longer... it would definitely not hold up if it came up for validation.

What Alan said. Even if you go back to an "original" state in PS, the EXIF data will say that the file was edited in Photoshop, and there's no way to know for sure if the editing was legal, so it would be DQ'd.

nice to know :-)

It's a good idea to make it a habit to never work on the original. Always make your first step to make a copy, and work on that. Not just because of challenges, but just in general to always have your untouched original to fall back on. You never know when you may want to go back and edit it differently, or you learn a new technique or whatever, plus...you always have your original if you enter it in a challenge :-)

You could shoot raw.

too late...

im editing (NOT THE ORIGINAL) now...

But would I have run into the same problem?

Did you erase the card? It may still be on there (original) if your reshoot goes poorly. Use a diff card if you have one.

Well, you can't save as RAW in Photoshop, so at least you wouldn't overwrite the original.

Not particularly hard to edit EXIF data, but I am not going to advise that at all.

Oh, didn't know that... too worried about HD space so never shoot in RAW, plus I have an old version of PS that won't read the 20D raw files...

Anway, reshoot and resubmit is done, with 8 minutes to spare... if only it had been that quick the first time!

Thanks for the quick response - you guys may have saved me some heart ache! This is my favorite shot that I've submitted.

Now I have a question....I upload my pictures with iPhoto, does that change the EXIF data at all?

just wondering...

If you "save" it without changing the name of the photo it overwrites the data...if you just upload it ...it should be alright.

Yeah, the upload should basically just be copying the information exactly as is from one spot to another. Like copying files from one folder to another, no data is changed.

ok...because my reflections image got DQ'd because of the date. But I know the date was right on the camera and I sent in the origional file...all I did was upload it with iPhoto. I still don't know what happened. But it doesn't bother me at all...no big deal. I just kinda want to know why it got changed.

I've never used iPhoto so I don't know if it 'resaves' the files when it transfers them (which would change the EXIF)... Might be worth trying to track down a mac photog.

When you make changes it iPhoto, it automatically saves the original in a separate folder so you can always "revert to original." Just to be on the safe side, I go directly to the Originals folder for that date in my iPhoto library and copy the file from there for uploading. A simple "Revert to Original" and "Export" would probably be OK though.

Save As is always the best option. You always want to keep the original, even if it's not for a challenge.
