Just an aside, for every comment I receive I look at the profile of each commenter to see who they are and how qualified they seem to be, formed on their own work, which must in itself be a useful exercise and an incentive to comment in the first place.
I agree it can be very difficult to comment constructively on an obviously bad photograph but I would never leave a cruel comment. One thing that really annoys me is the lack of acknowledgement on real critical comments in favour of the " lovely " comments that always get ticked as helpful.

I've been guilty of making "lovely" comments...sorry about that. I know they're not helpful, but I would hope it at least helped a tad to lift a spirit - and not a glass of booze, like the comments I got on one of my entries.

Nothing wrong with saying a pic is lovely, it is an encouraging comment, but also take the unfavourable comments as helpful too ( provided they are of course:-)).

I got some very good suggestions on my entry and I want to thank all who commented. I do mostly wildlife photography and even though suggestions are helpful, sometimes they are not practical. "better lighting", "distracring twigs" etc are helpful, but you usualy only have a split second to get the shot. One comment on my osprey even said something about the head missing on the fish it was carrying! I would like to tell the osprey to go get another fish and pose again but this won't happen!. Please take these things into consideration for your votes on all wildlife shots. Again thanks for all comments as I always thrive to better my techniques.

This is the second thread in which you've complained about the comments you received during this challenge - here where you stated your comments were "downright hateful" and now this one where you call the comments "snotty." I'd be curious to know which comments in particular you find hateful or snotty because I don't see any comments that I would even remotely consider to be either. A few people mentioned that they couldn't tell what it was (and to be honest, I couldn't either) but followed that up with helpful critiques/advice. What sort of comments do you consider acceptable?

i have to agree with MK - i just read the comments which you stated to have at least one "downright hateful" one among them, and saw absolutely no reason for you to be saying such a thing. Not a single one was rude, or even particularly critical. And with the acception of "good image" (which states an opion without elaboration, which in itself is a valid comment) every single one was helpful and just.
I also would like to know what you consider acceptable if these comments are not?

Not to kick a dead thread... the comments I was talking about weren't only about MY photos (some were). I've read comments others have received and thought a few of them were also a little harsh. I never used the word 'unacceptable'. I apologize if I was a too sensitive.
I appreciate your honesty here though.

Thanks! :-)

Hi all,

I know this thread has almost run its course but I just wanted to go on record with a huge vote of thanks to all who have taken the time to comment on my images. I'm new to dpc and new to photography. I'm struggling to get 4's let alone 6's. However, every challenge has seen my votes improve a little and this is due, in part, to the encouragement of some really generous people on dpc. Like most, I don't like taking a boot but I'm always ready to receive a helpful hint. Use your comments wisely, after all its your effort and heartbeats.
