all comments say how they love the shot, but they dont understand how I did that.
am I getting low scores becouse you dont understand how I did that? The photo has been validated, so what else is rong besides the fact that you dont understand how I did that. well after voting is over for this challenge
all post a small drawing showing how it was done. its not hard. I know the downsizing is hurting my shots, does not seem to be anything I can do about that, just keep saving for PS. Oh well on to the next challenge. just wish people would put alittle more in there comments on why they are giving a low score. |

Looks out of focus and soft. Also the colors are drab. Why did you shoot it at ISO400, f5, and 1/4 second? I would've shot it at ISO100, f11, and what ever shutter speed was needed. Of course, shoot it from a sturdy tripod. I think I would've given it a 4. Unless you're going for a blurry look, there's no reason for it.
I hope this helps. |

I think your picture suffered from not doing some simple post-processing. Peope are very used to seeing proper levels, etc. Your idea and execution was awesome. I don't think it was OOF, but the blacks were too light and you didn't use USM (which people, again, are very used to). This version took me literally less than 60 seconds to do...I think you would have done very well with it.
Don't mind the jaggies, that's from me working on your small picture...
EDIT: Well, on second thought, it is a little OOF. Notice the pumpkin stem where it is the worst...

DrAchoo has shown you a great example of how to post process. I'd ad to that; there's no reason youc an't produce a sharp, 640-pixel image for the challenges with your camera. That you're having to make the images so small tells me there's something you're not understanding.
You might find the Photoshop Basics Mentorship Thread a useful read. We started at the very beginning and worked our way right through the fundamental post-processing steps. Even if you don't use PS, the lessons are valid in general for any image editor; there's nothing fancy in it. Our next lesson will be on use of save-for-web to produce the best possible 640-pixel jpg from your image.

I'm confused. You post in the forums about how people did not post reasons why you got a low score, yet the only comment you marked helpful was the 'nothing but praise' comment. Maybe if people marked the 'here's what looks wrong to me' comments as helpful, then maybe more people would be more apt to leave them. If I were to look at that photo, I'd see that people only appreciate the 'nice shot' comments, and I'd want to leave more of that kind of comment. If you want people to leave more comments on why they think your pic isn't up to par, then you should probably appreciate those comments a little more. Just my opinion.
I have picked a few of the comments that were left on that photo, which I feel sum up pretty good why you did not score well. Hope this helps.
"Contrast looks off though."
"Is this overdiffused, or not quite in sharp focus?"
"the reflection aspect, however, doesn't seem to be a strong as the what the fire is doing."
"a very mediocre effort in the image quality department, especially the contrast could use a serious boost."
"Might be nice to have just a bit more contrast and sharpness "
"I wish the blacks were blacker"
"nice idea, but lacks contrast and sharpness."
"seems a little soft"
"Most people will look at it and say it's OOF "
"looks a little washed out on my monitor" |
