Falc, that's me.
I even have problem with hand held shooting in public :-(

Not an easy problem to get rid of.

I haven't read all the posts so I'm sorry if this has been said....PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! Can't ephasize that enough. The more you shoot the better you'll get and practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect :)

Why rule out postprocessing? Even for a complete beginner, if you intend to display images on the web it's good to at least learn basic resizing and cropping, perhaps sharpening and contrast adjustment.

The best beginner guideline rule I heard, I think it was somewhere here a long time ago:
Try using the flash when you don't think you need to, and try not using it when you think you do.
