That's certainly ONE thing photographs can do, and that's certainly a valid personal choice for you to make. But, interestingly enough, the winning photo, for me, fulfills one of your criteria in spades; it makes me "live in that time/place. I can FEEL the panic of the starlings, the aggression of the falcon, and I can feel an inkling of what it must be like to be in that flock, wheeling in mindless panic to escape this meance in the skies.
