I have a question about exposure.
On a Canon 300D (I don't know if it's same on other cameras)
there is a light metter that looks like this "I---I---(X)---I---I"
where X is a middle (balanced).
Now, if I underexpose 1 stop, does it mean my metter will say this:
"I---(I)---X---I---I" I used brackets to show where the pointer is.
Or "I---I---X---(I)---I" for 1 stop overexposed???
That's it. Or does it work differently? Like "I---I--(-)X---I---I"
for 1 stop underexposed.
May be a stupid question but I really don't know... |

From what I remember, the first case is correct. The final case would represent less than a stop underexposed.

well one easy way to find out would be to shoot the same shot - with three exposures as you have them shown, and compare the histograms ;}
but to the left is underexposed, and to the right is overexposed. the larger lines are single stops, the meter reads two stops in either direction.
edit my bad on the range...

Check the manual for the explanation of exposure compensation as well as the schematic diagram that explains the different buttons and displays.
-2|---|---0---|---|+2
This is what shows in both the display on the top of the camera and in the viewfinder when you look through it. Each hyphen represents 1/3 of a stop and the | mark a full stop.

RTFM ;o) - and always keep the manual with you. You never know when you'll need to look something up.

Yes, you are correct - the meter shows up to 2 stops over or under, in 1/3 stop increments.
In the auto mode(s) I don't think you can adjust it. In the creative modes you can use the * key and the jog dial to adjust eh exposure. In full manual mode you have complete control of course.
There is no Flash Exposure Control, but if you load in the undutchables firmware hack you can have that feature (and a few others) as well as the option of 1/2 stop instead of 1/3 stop exposure comp settings.
Also..if i recall, only in M mode is themeter partial (there is no spot metering). In all other modes it is evaluative.

in manual mode the meter is is center weighted average.
evaluative is used in all other creative modes unless AE lock is used in which case partial metering is used.
for the preset modes evaluative is used.
