ok - this is a RANT -- but it's regarding the current challenge ..... OK The topic sounds like a stupid question. But like many posts in the forums, I feel that i have an image that is a 9 ... and my score is below 5. THe REFLECTIONS challenge specifies that a reflective surface is photographed in a "creative" way ... without the camera being seen. The majority of the images i have scored so far showed trees or buildings and stuff reflecting in a body of water. Mine is similar, my shot has a rather subtle reflection and has philosophical and metaphorical substance - and I believe it is the best image I have ever posted in a challenge. Ok - everyone loves their own images ... but have I been TOO creative or am I just pushing the envelope.. I think that voters are going in with expectations, a pretense of what they expect. A big, obvious reflection is the only acceptable thing right???

I forgot to mention that about 70% of my image is non reflective but interacts with light in a major way ... ok - shutting up mow!

I presume that if the goal is a good vote tally here then you must 'do' what is expected here..........not always a great idea creatively?

in summary, yes .. that's a good way to put it.

Subtle, philosophical and metaphorical can be an incredibly difficult combination to pull off in a setting like this. Its all been covered before - the large number of pictures to vote on, the brief time each picture gets evaluated before a voter decides, various slurs against the voting public, etc., etc.

And, of course, without seeing your picture, I have to take your word that its really a "9" picture (a feat never achieved here, AFAIK). :) I don't think that, usually, a "9" picture will get voted below 5 if its anywhere near on topic. Maybe the reflection is not only less than 30%, but maybe its not obvious its a reflection...?

Creativity alone doesn't guarantee a high vote, and merely including a reflection might not be enough for everyone if it's a relatively insignificant detail in the image. Kinda' hard to respond without seeing the image, though. Why not ask for opinions when the challenge is over so we can see what we're supposed to be commenting on?

Personally I could care less about scores. Take a photo that meets the criteria, but don't compromise yourself in doing so. First & foremost please yourself then let the score fall where it falls. IMHO, very seldom are the best photos in a challenge ribbion winners. The best "photographs" are usually in the top 90%, but what bear_music calls "eye-candy" usually wins.

Well, I didn't think mine was a 9, but I had just about the same problem with my submission to the first version of this challenge (a long time ago!).

If you have a good photo which is not an in-your-face exemplar of the challenge topic, expect a few 10-9-8 votes from people who "get it" and a relatively low average from those who vote in 5 seconds/photo.

hyperfocal -you are right on there ... my wife says the same thing ... if i mention a score to her, she talks about how great my photos are and that people that don't like them are inferior and imbred (in-bread .. i don't know). Further - many people make the mistake of saying "could care less" when they really want to say "couldn't care less" ... i'm guessing you mean you couldn't care less!!! :) ...

thanks for the input ... GIVE ME A 9!!! ... sometimes the forum is a way to feel better - -and this was one of those times.

EXACTLY -- all the feedbacks are positive 8-10!!!
that's better than the alternative!
