So my new camera has arrived and I'm quickly finding out that the change from P&S to SLR is not an easy one...however, the challenge will be great and will keep me busy for a long time ;-)

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone can recommend reputable insurance companies to cover the body and glass. I don't have home insurance yet, so maybe I'd buy that and see if they'll cover the camera too. The thing is, I want complete cover - from water damage, theft and accidental damage. I've only just moved to US, and not many of the insurance companies I find from Google actually look that trustworthy!!

Thanks for any help!
Dave

Congrats David! Boy are you going to be dangerous now!

There are no reputable insurance companies. ;-)

What you might look for is renter's insurance. It's usually pretty reasonable and would be a good idea for covering loss of personal items...you should be able to add your camera to it. (I have a sister-in-law who works for a Syracuse based firm, would you like me to ask her who she would recommend in your area?

Congrats David! How exciting! Now if we all meet up again I'll be the only point and shoot person! But then again, I have $91 saved towards my new system! :) Only $900 more to go, LOL!

As for insurance companies, well, it's six of one, half a dozen of the other as we say, my advice is to find an agent that can get you different quotes and such. And be sure to document your new equipment, pictures, serial numbers, the works and keep copies of it all in a safe place and on file with the agent.

Can't wait to see you in action with that new baby!

I have full coverage on my body and my lenses through State Farm. I think it's only like $40 or $50 a month. Maybe not even that.... I dunno, I don't pay the bill ;)

But it is fully covered for ANYTHING that may happen to it.

jeez, at that rate you could just get a new cam every year or so and be done with it! :)

david: if you are renting a place, you should have renter's insurance. many "reputable" insurance companies offer that.

if you own a place and don't have insurance yet, GET IT NOW! haven't you noticed that someone up above is pissed at us and throwing every natural disaster possible our way? :)

in either case, i know that some policies have special "riders" for computer equipment, where you can specify particular equipment for replacement. i am not sure where camera equipment would fall into something like that, but it's definitely something to check out.

Yes, I completely agree, and it's at the top of my things-to-do list. Hopefully I'll get it sorted by the weekend...I love my camera so much already, and I don't know how I'd react if something went disastrously wrong! (Although badly, I expect!)

Don't be afraid to use it. I remember when I got my D70, I was almost too scared to take it anywhere b/c I was worried that something would happen to it.
