...to take photos of a friend of mine who will be performing one song as part of a benefit concert with many other artists.

Needless to say, I'm seriously PUMPED about it! Not sure what permissions I will get, but I'll probably be given a press pass.

The Bell Center is where the Montreal Canadians play hockey. It's a 18,000 seat venue, but will probably be set up for about 8-10,000 in a more intimate style setup. WOW!

Anyhow, here's my question: What gear should I bring?

Here's what I have available:

20D
DRebel
Canon 17-40 f/4 L
Tamron 28-75 f/2.8
Canon 70-200 f/4 L
Canon 50 f/1.8
Monopod/tripod
420 EX

Can I get enough light with these lenses? Can I get close enough? Would you suggest I rent a 70-200 f/2.8 L IS? Other suggestions? There are a couple of stores in Montreal that rent lenses, but it depends on what's available. Anybody in Montreal care to LEND me a fast lens with reach? ;)

If there's anybody who has shot in a big arena, I'd especially love to hear from you.

Thanks.

How close will you be to the stage? I'd rent a 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, bring the 28-75 f/2.8 and 50mm f/1.8, monopod and flash

I'd go with a 70-200 IS since i suspect you won't be allowed to use a flash and monopod.

Also some kind of good wide angle lense is a good idea.
No need for anything else.

Lots of memory cards and batteries, and click away...

Is there much of a learning curve to the 70-200 2.8 IS ?

The show is tomorrow night, so I'll have at most my lunch time to play around.

Anybody on this? Also, should I bring both bodies, or is that too much?

If you're bringing two lenses it might be worth it to bring both bodies. Just mount the lenses on the two bodies and you're good to go. No switching lenses, just grab the camera you need for the shot you want.

Well I tried, but there were no 2.8 IS's available at my local store, so I will be going (in a few minutes) with my 20D with 70-200 f/4 L as well as my DRebel with 28-75 f/2.8 attached. I'll keep my 50 f/1.8 in my pocket, just in case.

Hope there's lots of light. Wish me luck

I'll show some pics later on.
